Seeking Fortune

Feilans have finally entered the realm of space in their solar system, a vast area, full of exotic planets and phenomena. The colonies created by the old Edwinish Party have developed into a new faction, the Dmitrians, whom are descended from Feilans, but whom have developed a separate cultural identity from their colonial forefathers. At the edge of the system lurks the formidable faction known as the Immortals, a group of furs whom have used technology to live forever, in a constant state of hostility with Feila and Dmitri, both of whom are on tense enough relations as it is. All natives are furry (Skin Avian are present here too). No native humans.

Sakura winced a little as Alfred stared, then made a comment about the heads floating out of the ship. 'should not have done that.' She mentally scolded herself as she tried to come up with some sort of an explanation. "Oh, uh. things like that sometimes happen around me." She replied. It was a terribly lame explanation, but she wan't quite thinking straight at the moment. This was her first time seeing anything like the terrible scene that was playing out in her own ship.

"Oh no, there's more in that crate too?" She asked with some obvious dismay when Alfred opened up the second shipping container, and commented on it's contents. "What was going on here?" She asked the open air as she tried her best to settle herself.

The otter grimaced. "Hopefully nothing..... unnatural.. is going on. I'd hate to have to deal with some nasty unknown creature or something like that." He scratched thoughtfully at his eyepatch for a moment before continuing. "People are easy enough to deal with, you can either reason with em or plug them full of holes..... but monsters.....that's an unknown factor. That being said, I think we're dealing with people here, as gruesome as all this is."
"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

"I don't know, and I don't think I really want to know." Sakura replied. "I have the unfortunate feeling that we're not going to be that lucky." She said with a sigh. "Judging by the way that lab was ransacked where nothing else was, I think we may have what....whoever did this...wants." She paused. "Well, unless we're lucky and they wanted something else that they already got." She shook her head after another moment's pause. "We should get the..the body parts...off the ship though." She shuddered at the thought of picking the severed hands, and heads up to remove them from the ship.

Seeing the dragoness' unease, Alfred said: "Don't worry about the nasty bits, I'll take care of that." The otter grimaced and began to pile up the heads and hands, and carried them over to one of the station's airlocks. He placed them inside and sealed the door, after which he mumbled a short prayer, and then depressurized the chamber, sending the body parts floating out into the void beyond. As he completed this and watched the parts drift off, Sakura could see him cover his sole remaining eye, and shake his head violently. He looked back out, and then repeated this.
"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

Sakura shuddered again as she watched Alfred gather up the heads and hands, and take them to one of the airlocks. "Thank you." She said quietly as Alfred watched the body parts drift out into space. She watched his reaction for a moment before speaking again. "Something wrong?" She asked. "I mean aside from the obvious problem of having to jettison body parts." She clarified. "We should probably get out of here." She commented as she headed back on to the ship to get it ready to leave. "We should probably be extra alert as we head out too....just in case whoever did this is waiting somewhere nearby." She added as she started getting the ship switched out of standby mode and ready to take off again.

(Sorry about the wait)

The otter shuddered slightly, before realizing Sakura had seen the motion. "Oh... err... Its nothing. Just this old eye seeing things."
He followed her back aboard the ship and quickly hopped into his seat. "You planning on reporting this?" He asked, looking at her curiously.

Sakura frowned a bit at Alfred's reply. "Well...okay." She replied. Had she known the otter longer, she may have pushed the point. She didn't know him well though, so accepted his answer, not wanting to upset her companion any more.

She had been a little lost in her own thoughts when Alfred asked about reporting what had happened. "Probably should, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to do it from here, I'm not sure I want to do it at all." She paused in thought for a moment. "Maybe something anonymous once were out of the immediate area." She decided.

"We should get going." She said as she got the ramp closed up, and worked on getting the containers closed back up. With everything closed back up, she started heading for the cockpit. "Ready to go?" She called over her shoulder as she went.

"I agree. If we transmitted a report from here, it would be easier for who ever did this to track us, or at least they'd know when we were here, and they could estimate where our next destination may be and when we'd arrive." He shrugged. "There didn't seem to be anyone or anything still at the station other than our cargo, so I'm not really sure who it was. If it were pirates, they would have taken the cargo."

"I reckon we should prepare for potential combat and get moving as quickly as possible."

Sakura nodded. "Yeah, it does seem a bit more....calculated..than the average pirate attack." She agreed as she sat down at the primary station in the cockpit, and started getting the ship ready to go. She sighed at the thought of getting into ship to ship combat, not because she didn't think they could handle it, but at the idea of the potential damage to her ship. "With the way our luck is running so far on this venture, they'll probably wait till we're too far from anything to have any hope of help." She muttered when Alfred recommended they be prepared for a potential attack.

She shook her head, and checked the readouts before she took hold of the ship's controls and started guiding it away from the mining asteroid. Little did the pair know that the were being tracked even then, without them sending a signal. A beacon had been hidden deeper in the cargo they were carrying, but the pair had been too distracted by the more gruesome contents to search for something as simple as a locator beacon.

As they pulled further away from the asteroids, a signal went out, and it was heard.

The otter paced about the ship, checking sensors and glancing out the view ports. After a while of doing this, he returned to his post, and did checks on all the weapon systems. He fidgeted in his chair as he checked the systems over and eyed the sensor data. Alfred also tinkered with his pistol, adjusting the sights and screwing on a stock.

"Almost too quiet.... I don't like this." He grumbles, checking one of the forward viewports for the umpteenth time. "Can you check the com system to make sure it works?"

Alfred's nervous pacing around the ship was doing nothing to help Sakura's already frayed nerves after their discovery of the grisly additional cargo that had been added to their shipment. Her tail lashed back and forth in the air behind her as an expression of her won nervousness as she concentrated on flying the ship, and finding the best course for them to take to their destination.

As they got deeper into open space, and further from any possible assistance, Alfred asked her to check the communications. "The system is working fine." She said, her voice a little tight. "See, a message just came through." She said as she pulled up the message, and played it over the ship's speaker system. "We know you have it. Let us board, and hand it over, and you can continue unscathed" The voice over the speakers told them. Just as the message finished, several ships pinged on the sensors, just coming within range.

"I don't believe them for a second" Sakura announced, shuddering as she thought about what had happened to all those furs on the mining station. "I think we should get ready for a fight." She told Alfred as she took hold of the ship's controls.

"If they want our cargo, they'll have to try and board us. Let's take advantage of that. They probably won't want to damage the ship too much in fear of destroying the cargo." The otter topped off his pistol magazine. "That means that we can take advantage of their unwillingness to attack, and surprise them." He scrambled into the weapon control station. "So what did you say this little tub was armed with again?" He asks as he checks the weapons systems.

"Yeah, hopefully." Sakura responded nervously when Alfred reasoned that their aggressors may not be willing to attack. "We really just need to hold them off long enough for me to get the big drive up and ready." She commented as she started working through systems screens. A hull heavy thrum began to fill the ship as Sakura presumably turned on what she called 'the big drive'.

"Oh, there's a 120mm rail cannon top and bottom. We've got a pair of sensor scrambler missiles, probably best not to use those against fighters, would do more harm to us than good. A dozen dual warhead missiles, and a disintegration cannon." She replied to Alfred's question. "Just make your shots count." She added as he turned on the weapons systems. The seat made a couple small jerks as the system quickly calibrated and the display screens came to life.

The ships were, for the moment, hanging just at the edge of sensor range, and outside truly effective range of all the weapons systems except maybe the rail cannons, though it would take some careful aiming to hit anything with them at the current range.

The otter nodded, though he quietly swore when he saw the controls were largely computerized. He took something out of his coat pocket, and plugged it into the ship's computer system- it was a rather old fashioned coincidence rangefinder. He began to range in on the nearest of the ships, but held fire.

"No sense in giving away the actual power of our armament before they close a bit." He examined the closest of the ships on the view screen, hoping to discern the nature of their enemy.

"Sure.." Sakura Called distractedly from below as she continued to prepare the ship for attempting a getaway.

The smaller ships continued to keep their distance, hanging just outside effective range while they began to fan out and surround their quarry. As the smaller ships positioned themselves, another, much larger ship edged into sensor range. It was most likely the ship that the small ones working to surround them had come from.

"Well crap." Sakura said as she noticed the new ship's arrival.

As the much larger ship arrived, the smaller ships suddenly burst into full speed motion, quickly closing the distance between them and Sakura's ship.
