Odd Jobs

Post by Asyriel » Wed Feb 06, 2013 12:10 pm

((here we go, let me know if you think I should make any changes))

Sakura woke to the sound of an alert from her ships automated navigation system "Entering Dimitri planetary system" the computer announced as she got out of bed, and navigated her way toward the pilot's seat. Once there, she pulled up the ship status and coordinates. As she did so, the navigation system prompted her to set an approach course. Once her path was set, she contacted the planet side port to clear her arrival. With everything prepared, she had some time to sit and think while she waited for her final approach. She had spent the last couple months out in the astroid belt, helping a couple of the more major mining operations with repairing and salvaging some severely damaged equipment. The job had paid well enough, but after deducting her expenses, and what the cost of resupplying her ship would be, not to mention docking fees at the port. She sighed at the thought, but she did have enough to treat herself with decent accomodations at least while she was planetside.

It wasn't too much longer before she was prompted to take control of the ship for final approach and entery. Entery and docking went smoothly, and fees were deducted from her account. With the ship taken care of, she went to her cabin, and collected what she would need for her stay, and stuffed it all into a bag. She left her ship, still wearing her flight suit and headed out into the crowded and active port. There were furs everywhere, moving: passengers, crew, port workers, and locals, it was a diverse crowd; she even thought she may have spotted a few Felians. She made her way through the crowd as best she could, having to jostle others a bit every now and then to get throuhg. Her first priority was to get in touch with someone to resupply her ship, then it was off to her lodging; she was looking forward to having a real shower, and fresh food. Her mouth started watering just thinking about having a nice fresh meal.

Sakura continued to make her way through the crowded port toward the outfitters, her mind lost in thoughts of the meal that would follow shortly....

((ooc: After this, I’ll be unavailable until Monday. Sorry!))

Apollo, or ‘App’ as he preferred to be known, was also dodging through the crowd, looking for inspiration more than anything else. He desperately wanted to see more than the planet of his birth, but there weren’t very many opportunities for an unskilled, sixteen-year-old runaway to board a ship.

*What on earth am I going to do now?*

So lost was App in his thoughts, he didn’t notice Sakura until she was almost upon him, and the vibrantly-hued hybrid had to hop backwards to avoid a collision. “Sorry, ma’am!” he yelped quickly. then, because his father had always been adamant regarding how to treat ladies, App added, “is there something I could help you with?”

Well, it was a start. He could pick up just about any simple job. And maybe, just maybe this was his ticket off-planet.

Sakura was brought from her thoughts quickly as she heard App's yelp, and appology. She stopped and looked back at thehybrid, he was among the most colorful she had seen. She smiled at the hybrid. "my appologies" she said before looking around and realizing that while she had been lost in thought, she had gotten herself lost in reality as well. Her attention was brought back to App as he asked if she needed any help with anything.
"Actually there is...." she started, pausing to think a moment. "do you know this place well?" she asked "I seem to have gotten myself a little lost" she admitted, the scales on her face darkening with a blush of embarrasment. "I need to get supplies for my ship, if you know of a reputable supplier, and wouldn't mind showing me the way, I would appreciate it" she said, ending with a slightly embarrased smile. She thought for a couple more moments, and spoke again.
"of course if you have nothing else to do, I wouldn't mind a companion for the day who knows his way around the local area. I could also use a hand loading supplies on my ship in the morning too...I will pay of course" she said, this time with a broad smile. After the solitary trip from the astroid belt to Dmitri, she enjoyed the idea of having someone to talk to and the young hybrid before her seemed a good candidate.
"My name is Sakura" She said, while holding out a hand

As App took in the imposing figure before him, he was more than a little glad he’d been able to avoid plowing into her. *A dragon? Don’t see many of those, even on Dmitri…* And she was apologizing to him? A second glance revealed that she wasn’t as old as he had previously thought—though she was still his elder by a few years.

"Do you know this place well?"

App shrugged. “I’ve been in the area a few weeks, so more or less…”

"I need to get supplies for my ship, if you know of a reputable supplier, and wouldn't mind showing me the way, I would appreciate it."

The boy smiled in genuine pleasure, though that had the effect of revealing his crocodile teeth . The things we think will be impressive when we’re ten… “As a matter of fact, I do! Right this way!” The supplier had been his first job in the area, and App had been employed filing paperwork in the office during a busy period when several fleets had landed in quick succession, and he could vouch firsthand for their honest pricing.

He turned and began maneuvering through the crowd once more, but slower this time, so that Sakura could keep up.

"Of course, if you have nothing else to do, I wouldn't mind a companion for the day who knows his way around the local area. I could also use a hand loading supplies on my ship in the morning too...I will pay of course."

She had her own ship? And she wanted company? App made a mental note to be on his best behavior—chances like this didn’t come along very often! He spared a second to make a sweeping bow in the Feilan fashion, before springing upright, almost bouncing with a teenager’s energy. “I would be delighted!” App grinned sheepishly. “I’d actually been in search of employment, so meeting you was a godsend!”

"My name is Sakura."

“And I’m Apollo, but please, call me App.” The nickname was a fairly recent development. Until he ran away, it’d been the pet name his mother had used when she tried to comfort him after a fight with his father. To the boy, it now represented choosing Dmitri, and himself, over his father’s Feilan sensibilities.

In a short while, they’d arrived at the supplier, and App held the door open for Sakura, the simple gesture as much a proof of his father’s influence as the fact that he even acknowledged his true name was Apollo…

Sakura followed App through the crowded port, most of the furs that saw her coming didn't linger in the muscular dragoness's path, and those that did, she manuvered past without much problem. She kept App in sight as she memorized the path, and surroundings on the way to the supplier.

She had grinned at App's use of some Feilan mannerisms, showing off teeth of her own looking similar to App's but slightly more at home in her maw. "it's wonderful to meet you App." she said as he introduced himself. Something about the way he had told her that he had been looking for work and her apporach being a godsend had her wondering. "Umm...not to be nosey, but do you have someplace to stay?" she asked as they arrived at the at the supplier.

She smiled again as App held the door open for her "why thank you." she said as she walked inside. She headed straight for the front desk. It wasn't long before she was noticed (a perk of being six and a half feet tall and built) by a clerk who quickly came over to help. "I need a full resupply, three months living requirements and five hundred 80mm slugs if you can get them" she told the clerk who quickly input the order into a computer, then showed her a price. She sighed at the price, but nodded "can you have the order delivered to dock 32C tomorrow morning?" she asked to which the clerk smiled and replied.
"yes Ma'am"
Sakura nodded and turned back to App. "well, that's taken care of. ready to go?" she asked as she headed toward the door. "so, I've ordered fuel through the port, supplies are ordered....I guess that leaves lodging, a real shower and a meal" she said as they headed out of the building. "I've got a small suite reserved at The Gateway...do you know where it is?" she asked, stopping outside for App to take the lead again.

Some place to stay? App glanced away, embarrassed. “Um, yeah. I’ve got a hotel room…” He trailed off. It wasn’t the nicest place, but it was cheap enough, and he hoped not to need it for long. Pretty soon, someone might get inquisitive, especially since he was pretty easy to peg as a runaway.

The trip to the supplier didn’t take long at all, and as they exited, App remarked off-handedly. “So you’re a merchant? Do you work for yourself, or are you affiliated with a company?” He didn’t want to pry, but he figured he needed to learn a lot about the ‘inner society’ of furs who made their living off-planet if he ever wanted to join them.

"So, I've ordered fuel through the port, supplies are ordered....I guess that leaves lodging, a real shower and a meal.”

App nodded, hesitating briefly when she mentioned lodging. He hoped she wouldn’t ask about where he was staying...it wasn’t in the best part of town, and while it was obvious Sakura could handle herself, he’d rather not put her in a situation to prove it.

"I've got a small suite reserved at The Gateway...do you know where it is?"

Ah, the Gateway. A reasonable place, in a better neighborhood then his own, but not outrageously expensive. Another advantage was several eateries along the way, so App immediately turned and began heading in that direction. “Right this way, Miss Sakura. And if you see a place you want to stop for a meal along the way, just let me know.”

Sakura chuckled. "I wouldn't exactly call myself a merchant, though I have worked with them." she replied as they walked "I'm a pilot and an engineer. I sell services rather than goods. Repairs, salvaging, design and construction, and the occasional armed escort" she listed off her most common forms of employment "and for now I'm freelance...maybe someday I'll hire on with a company" Of course, she didn't mention that the main reason she didn't work for any major companies was that she worried she might be tracked down through their employment records if she did.

"if you see a place you want to stop for a meal along the way, just let me know.”

Sakura smiled "I'll take note of what looks good, but I'd rather drop my things off before stopping for a meal" she replied, twisting so that App could see the fairly large duffle bag she carried slung across her body. "what would you reccomend to someone who has been in space living off rations for the last couple weeks?" she asked him as she noted several places that looked like they would serve up a good meal.

They eventually arrived at The Gateway, Sakura went up to the main desk where she was greeted and she checked in. She was handed her key, which was nothing more than an encrypted RF tag that would unlock her room, and track what she used from inside. She turned and motioned for App to follow her. "no point in waiting out here" she said as she led the way to her room.

They arrived at her room within a couple minutes and Sakura opened the door. The room was a small suite, there was a kitchenette connected to a living room with a nice compliment of furniture and entertainment options. Seperate from the living room area was the bedroom, and the bathroom. "make yourself at home." she said as she headed for the bathroom "I'll be ready to go in a bit" she said before closing the door.

Sakura enjoyed a fairly long, hot, shower. It was one of those things that you start to miss when you're in space and water conservation is of utmost importance, where water doesn't fall so it has to be sort of spread over the body, then vacumed off when finished. She had almost forgotten how nice it was to have hot water cascading down her scales. She eventually turned off the water and got out of the shower. She dried herself quickly, and put on some fresh clothes; a skirt, short sleeved shirt, and lightweight hooded jacket. She emerged from the bathroom a short time later, carrying her bag, and the flight suit she had been wearing before. She took both items to the bedroom, dropping the bag at the foot of the bed and the suit in the laundry.

"Allright...ready to go" she announced with a wide smile on her face...

Apollo made a mental note of Sakura’s list of jobs…they sounded pretty non-descript, the kind of things a runaway could do without fear of being tracked down…which made them perfect for him to consider.

"I'll take note of what looks good, but I'd rather drop my things off before stopping for a meal.”

App nodded. “Makes sense. Sorry I didn’t think of that…I’m not used to traveling with luggage.” Realizing how much he almost gave away, App could have swallowed his tongue.

"What would you recommend to someone who has been in space living off rations for the last couple weeks?"

Apollo stopped, thinking. Having never tasted space rations, he wasn’t 100% positive, but he’d heard the stories. “Gavin’s is pretty popular with fleet captains and ship jockeys, but it tends to be crowded. Izzy’s prices are just as good, and if you ask me, their food is slightly better, but it’s a little off the beaten path, so it’s usually pretty quiet.”

He could give an honest assessment, as he’d worked as a dishwasher in both eateries at one point in the past few weeks, and he’d been more impressed with how Izzy treated her employees. Though he no longer worked there, he figured he could do what he could to repay the kindness shown him.

Sakura led him into her hotel—into her room—and App watched as she slipped off to take a shower. Make himself at home? It would be a while, he knew, remembering early days when his mom still flew for her company—the first shower after coming back would be pretty long, and he didn’t begrudge her the time.

He sat on the couch in the living-room area, and reached a hand for one of the remotes, then stopped, staring at the scaly iguana arms, patterned with tiger stripes that had once been silver and black, but were now deep green and neon yellow. He liked the effect, but his father had thrown a fit. But as much as Apollo wanted to hate his father, he couldn’t. Anytime he tried, he’d remember the early years, when his father, invalid though he was, would each him sword fighting, or about the Feilan culture.

App closed his eyes, inwardly resolving not to break down—not to go crawling back. The fur he’d looked up to as a child seemed to have disappeared, replaced by a stiff, growling individual determined to cart him off to a planet he’d never seen and a life he’d never fit in with.

Sakura emerged and App leaped to his feet, his gloomy mood vanishing. Winking, he asked in a melodramatic, over exaggerated imitation of his father, “Fantastic, milady! And may I ask which dinning establishment we shall be patronizing tonight?”

Sakura chuckled at App's melodrama, oh how she had missed interacting with real furs. "I believe, the young gentelman recommended a place called Izzy's" she replied with a smile. she let App take the lead, and fell into step beside him. As the pair walked she wondered to herself about his comment about not being used to using luggage. Was he on his own? she wondered. It definetly seemed like he was, but what was the reason. She had a feeling that getting that story out of him would not be easy, she'd have to approach the subject carefully. Maybe if she told him her own story he would see her as sympathetic. These thoughts rolled through her head as did their surroundings on the way to Izzy's. She finally resolved that she would tell him her story and see if she couldn't convince him to tell his while they ate. "so, what kind of food do they serve here?" she asked curiously as they approached the resturaunt's entrance.

App returned Sakura’s smile. “Izzy’s it is!”

Both furs were silent as App led the way to the eatery, leaving both to their thoughts. He was curious as to how his companion had acquired her own ship so young, but didn’t like to pry. As he knew all too well, some stories were private.

"So, what kind of food do they serve here?"

Sakura’s question startled App out of his thoughts, but his reply came quickly. “Just about anything grilled or fried—but be sure to save room for dessert. Izzy’s specialty is her pies. Talk about to die for…”

So saying, Apollo once more held the door for the dragon, before stepping inside himself. Izzy’s was a clean, reasonably well-lit place—the kind of establishment where the owner herself contributes in the kitchen, makes the rounds to check on the diners at various tables, and remembers the names and preferences of all regular customers.

As such, App wasn’t too surprised to see the matronly grey cat zero in on the new arrivals, beaming ecstatically. “Apollo!—sorry—App! Well, I never—I wondered what you’d gotten yourself up to after you finished up your job here. Who’s your friend?”

App smiled. “Hey, Izzy. You know me, bouncing from place to place. This is Sakura. She’s new in town, and wanted to know where the best place to eat was, so I steered her here.”

Izzy blushed and scowled at the same time. “Away with you, you flattering rascal!” She turned and called over her shoulder to a younger cat nearly a carbon-copy of herself, “Nezzie! Is table six open?”

“Yes, mama,” came the reply.

“Two for six then!” Izzy smiled at the two guests, saying as she began to walk away. “Nezzie will show you to your table, and I’ll check in with you later. The pies tonight are cherry, pecan, or chocolate; if you’re interested.”

The younger cat, around Apollo’s age, came bustling over with two menus and sets of silverware. “Follow me!” She led them to the table, saying as they seated themselves, “I’ll be back for your drink orders in a moment.” As Nezzie turned to walk away, she glanced back at App with an odd look on her face. “You’ll want you usual, right?”

App blushed. How could he explain just getting water—not being able to afford even his usual? She must’ve seen his expression, for the silvery feline put a paw to her hip. “Don’t give me that, App, you know the rule—former employees and guests of theirs eat free.” Apollo started to protest that he didn’t want to be a charity case, but Nezzie cut him off. “No ‘buts’—it’s mama’s rule. I’ll give you a few moments to decide; then I’ll be back.”

App watched her go a little wistfully, then commented to Sakura without quite thinking about it, “On the whole, and as good as the food is, sometimes I think the best thing at Izzy’s is the people.”

"grilled food and pie...sounds great" Sakura had replied as App opened the door to the resturaunt. "thank you" she said as she walked past him and into the building.

Sakura stayed quiet, but was smiling happily while she observed App's interaction with Izzy. She waved and said "hello" when App introduced her. All of this was followed quickly by Nezzy showing up and Sakura, the interactions between App and Nezzy were slightly different, they seemed to have an air of a bit more familiarity to them.

"you know the rule—former employees and guests of theirs eat free.”

Sakura settled her attention on Nezzy "why thank you; that is very generous of you and Izzy. please tell her I said so" she said, smiling again, perfectly content with free food, be it charity or not.

As Nezzy headed off, Sakura looked at the menu, then turned her attention to App. "The people do seem pretty great here...speaking of which...you never mentioned you had worked here" she said with mock severity. "so, what's your usual? Is it good?" she asked. She was contemplating ordering grilled fish, but was curious how App's tastes ran. "And if it's not digging too deep, why don't you tell me a bit about yourself. You seem pretty well liked around here."

Nezzie acknowledged Sakura’s gratitude before bustling away to check on the diners a few tables away.

Apollo blushed. “It was just for a week or so…I was a dishwasher. It was a great experience, but I didn’t want to be stuck on the ground.” That, and he’d been worried about getting too close to Nezzie. The hybrid was acutely aware that a relationship with him would give the cat no future, and decided to cut short their budding…well, it hadn’t turned to romance, though it had headed in that direction.

"So, what's your usual? Is it good?"

“Hm? Oh, the fried chicken…The dishwashing station is closest to the fryer, so I’d always smell it cooking…That, and my mom never could fry chicken right. Grill, bake, sauté or soup—but she just couldn’t fry it. But everything here is pretty good; I don’t think I’ve ever heard a dish at Izzy’s get a bad review.”

"And if it's not digging too deep, why don't you tell me a bit about yourself. You seem pretty well liked around here."

App had to smile at the last comment, and memories of his time in the kitchen. “Izzy could find something to like about a pirate…she makes everyone who comes in feel like family, and thinks of all her workers as such. If it turns out I can’t make it off-planet, I’d be sorely tempted to come back.”

Knowing he couldn’t keep dodging her technically-unasked question much longer, App made a pretense of scanning his menu, just to try to buy time to think. He didn’t want to lie, but… “I’m a runaway…” That much was safe, as she’d probably already guessed it. “My dad and I didn’t agree about what I should do with my life…or about anything, really. I got fed up with it all one day, and left.”

He tried to make it sound as off-hand as possible, but he wasn’t sure how successful that effort was. He figured he’d scuttled most of his chances with that one admission, and was grateful that further conversation was interrupted by Nezzie’s return, notepad in hand, ready to record the drink orders.

She raised one eyebrow at App. “Water with dinner, decaf with pie, right?” App nodded, and Nezzie turned to Sakura. “And for you, Miss?”

Sakura couldn't help but chuckle as App mentioned his mother's inability to fry chicken properly. "well, I guess that's a pretty sound reason.." she laughed

She nodded as App finally spilled the beans about being a runaway, her expression was full of sympathy for she had been in a similar situation herself only a couple of years earlier. She had technically been old enough to be on her own, the circumstances behind her existance made it kind of a grey area. She had been about to say something when Nezzy came back for their drink orders.

"Iced tea please." Sakura replied. She waited for Nezzy to leave their table before she spoke again, this time with a barely contained grin.

"so, you want to get off planet huh?" she asked "well, it just happens that my ship is built for three, and I've been running it by myself" she continued. "If you work hard, and are willing to listen and learn..." she paused as if pondering the idea. "I'd be glad to have some company." She finished before leaning in close. "believe it or not, I was in a similar situation not so long ago...except I already had a ship" she whispered before leaning back into her seat, still grinning. "so, what do you say....want to join me?" she asked and waited, brimming with excitement, for his answer

As Nezzie took Sakura’s drink order, App tried to compose himself. He was pretty sure this would be the last job he could get in the area, now that it was official he was a runaway. Besides, how long would it be before his father could track him this far, if he was looking?

"So, you want to get off planet huh?"

App looked up quickly, surprised. He nodded emphatically, and Sakura kept going.

"Well, it just happens that my ship is built for three, and I've been running it by myself. If you work hard, and are willing to listen and learn... I'd be glad to have some company."

It took a herculean effort from Apollo to keep his jaw from dropping. This was the chance he’d always wanted, and it practically fell into his lap? This can’t really be happening, at least, not to someone with my luck…But if this is a dream, I don’t want to wake up!

"Believe it or not, I was in a similar situation not so long ago...except I already had a ship. So, what do you say....want to join me?"

App swallowed, trying to get enough of a voice to reply. “A-absolutely! You won’t regret it—I’m a fast learner!”

Sakura couldn't hold back the pleased grin at App's reaction to her offer. She could easily put herself in his shoes, and was extremely pleased that she could help him accomplish what he wanted to do.

"I guess then I should say...welcome aboard" She said with a wink. "so, tomorrow we'll get supplies loaded, and go through a few routine checks on the ship, and the next day we'll be off planet...how's that sound to you?" she asked. "though we may have to pick you up a suit...none of the ones I have would accommodate your wings" she paused a moment in thought. "we should probably see if we can find you something today that way if adjustments have to be made, it can be done before we leave." As she said this, she browsed through the menu again, deciding what she wanted to eat.

"so, what kind of skills do you have?" she asked offhandedly as she waited on Nezzy to return and take her meal order.
