Domish Language

Post by RabidFox »

READ THIS FIRST: The following is an article about the Domish language. This article is NOT necessary information. Even if you are creating a Domish character, you do NOT need to read this article. This article is only for those of who are interested.

The Domish Language

The people of Domus have their own national language, which is technically spoken by the majority of the population. For the sake of keeping things simple, you can ignore this national language during role-playing and have Domish characters speak in English. This way you don't have to posses any understanding of the Domish language to role-play in Domus. However, if you'd like to use the Domish language during role-playing for additional realism and creativity, then please feel free to do so.

The Domish language is identical in all aspects to Earth's French. Therefore, if you know enough French, you can give your Domish characters extra depth by having them speak partially or entirely in French. If you don't need non-French speakers to understand your characters' speech, then you don't have to provide translations in English, though, you will need to provide translations if you want non-French speakers to understand the dialog.

Remember, even the occasional use of a single word or phrase can make role-playing more interesting and entertaining. You don't need to have your character speak in nothing but French to make good use of the language. Simply being able to greet other characters, use a particular saying here and there, and speak words of significance is more than adequate. Fluency is not at all a requirement to have fun with French in role-playing.

Also, and additional use for Mais that is very easy to slip into rp's is meaning but for example:

J'adore l'histoire car c'est interesant et facile MAIS c'est inutile et le prof c'est tres stricte!

Which is (very loosely considering my ability with French):

I love history, its interesting and easy BUT it's not useful and the teacher is very strict.

I really don't know how the Dutch word for "but", namely "Maar", got there >_> I'll change it, thanks for pointing out

While we're at it, does anyone here speak french?

I'm kind of intermediate at french, but I barely know anyone at the moment to practice it with.

The list of French words that Guynio posted has suffered from the migration from phpbb2 to phpbb3, and the accents have become messed up. Is there anyone that knows French that could fix the accents? I don't know any French, so I'm at a loss. Unless you can edit the post, Guynio. Thanks.

ça va? - How are you?
ça va bien, merci, et toi? - I am good, thanks, and you?
Au revoir! - See you later, literally "Until next time")
Mais - But (Pronounced as "meh")

Should become:

Ça va?
Ça va bien, merci, et toi?

Mais - actually pronounced kind of like mhey, but oh well. =p

I find it funny that Ca va means "It goes".
