Desert Wanderer (open)

Post by Ruean The Rogue »

Bast, the sphynx, walked slowly across the desert sands, between Aket Aton and Tel-el-kabir. She kept her pace modest for being part feline. She could have covered a lot more of a distance but to her it was unwise to use her speed. She felt by traveling at a slower pace she was conserving strength, which she needed. For being a lone female traveling alone in the desert, she was sure to come across company of a malevolent nature.

She allowed herself to stop to place her dagger in the sand. She glanced up at where the sun was and looked down at her dagger. It was late in the afternoon, but that was not what she was checking. She was still traveling a little to west for her tastes. Removing her dagger, she set off toward the northeast. She checked her water sack, halfway through. She knew though she still had about another day’s worth of traveling to go. She sighed and placed her water sack away. She searched for any sign of animals through out her journey so far only small snakes and scorpions. She would love a gazelle but they were hard to come by.

She continued on her journey though reserving strength she was gaining thirst. She felt the need to hold out on what little she had to drink and grabbed a bite of Jerked meat from her bag. Taking a bite she decided to take the time to sit and rest. When the sun would set in a few hours she would dig to try and find some water to refill her sack.

Sibuna stalked his way through the desert; the smell of dry wind and heat sent a nostalgic wave of familiarity through him. Dispite what most creatures would consider discomfort, he felt relaxed and at ease in his surroundings. He wiggled his toes into the sand, absorbing the scorching warmth. Only allowing himself to stall for a moment, he continued forward, closing his eyes for a few seconds, then reopening them. No longer wearing a heavy headdress or a stuffy outfit made it a lot easier to enure the desert heat, although he did miss them.

He shielded his eyes against the sun as he swept his head from side to side. Not much in sight. Luckily for him though, heading East only meant that the sun would soon be behind him and no longer beating horribly on his face.

Hours passed and he grew tired of traveling. Although he was old in years, his mentality was sometimes that of a much younger jackal. He snorted sand away from his nostrils and plopped himself down on the ground, next to some rather shody looking shrubbery. A small family of geckos quickly retreated into their holes, in hopes of not becoming someone's snack. Sibuna growled at them, sticking out his tongue in an oh-so-mature fashion.
He then flopped backward into the sand, stretching out his arms and legs, yawning into the sky. He would wait there until nightfall, when he was hopefully feeling less lazy.

Bast traveled eastward to try and find her way. Feeling the sun setting was a comfort to her. Her lion-like eyes could see better in the dark than in the blazing sun. She closed her eyes taking a deep breath. Looking forward as she opened them she came across a jackle laying in the sun not fourty feet from her. She crouched herself low and crept closer. She took in a deep sniff. Male. Older. Like that meant much to her. Her experiance told her just cause they were older did not mean that they were less dangerous. Twenty feet. She could see he was breathing. Not having trouble so he was ok and not in need of assistiance. Before she knew it, it was dark. The desert sun had set. She needed to dig for water. Bringing herself a few more paces away, toward a palm tree, she began to dig in the sand. It wouldn't be too long before she hit water.

Buna groaned slightly. He wasn't quite bothered by the desert sun, but it certainly would have been a lot easier to sleep had it not been shining right on his face. He ignored this and tried to slumber anyhow.

His ears twitched as he heard footsteps in the sand. Opening one eye just slightly, he glanced over to the cat, crouching not too far off. Assuming that if he stayed still, she wouldn't be threatened...or try to kill him, he continued laying where he was. That is, until he saw her digging in the sand.
Sibuna sat up, the sand cascading off of his head and back. He shook his ears out and cocked his head to the side, watching the feline. At this point he stretched then stood up, dusting himself off. He stretched yet again and began to walk toward the palm tree.
"Looking for burried treasure?" He called from about 30 feet away, not wanting to impose too much.

The hair on her back stood up as she turned her head toward him. She was startled by his sudden movement as well as him calling out to her. Seeing he only sat up and not stood up she answered him. "Water to refill my sack." She was close. The sand was begining to be heavy. Soon the sand would be cool to touch and then water. She stopped from digging for a second to stretch and crack her back. Again she continued to dig. She kept an eye on him. He may be away from her but still a threat. She hit water. She dug a little deeper to allow it to be in her grasp. She reached into her bag and pulled out a strange looking water sack. It was made to have fine holes in the fabric to allow water to pass but not sand. She also pulled out a bowl. She filled the sack with the water from the pit and placed it over the bowl with spout. She held it until the water drained out. She placed the sack down and carefully poured the water from the bowl to her sturdy water sack. Filling it. She turned the sack with the fine holes in it inside out to empty it of the wet sand and refilled it once more. She watched the jackle with one eye as she did this.

He nodded "Ah, water, yes...."
He stood and walked slowly over toward the cat, careful not to be too overbaring.
His tongue worked the inside of his dry mouth.
good idea, actually.

Within a moment or so he was standing of to the side from her, careful to not walk out of her line of sight, as this was generally rude and unwelcome. His eyes followed the cat's movements as he watcher her work. Within a couple minutes he decided it was time to sit down again. Although he would probably never show it, he was impressed that she knew how to filter the sand from the water. A nifty trick. Many ancient people died from injesting sand. It would get baked into their bread and wear away their teeth as they ate it, leaving openings in their mouth for bacteria to grow. This bacteria would eventually makes its way to the brain and poof! They were dead. Sand is a tricky, tricky little substance. Sibuna traced one claw around in the soft sand as he pondered this, making delicare swirls and patters in the surface. He flicked his ears as a desert insect few by it, then continued with his "artistry".
"So.... what brings you out here...?"

"Travel." She drank the water in the bowl and shifted the sand again for more water. She handed the bowl over to the Jackle. "Thirsty?"

Another traveler, interesting. He nodded once.
"Beautiful things out here," he motioned to the desert around him, 'desprite how harsh it is..."
"Please," he said, reaching out toward the bowl then drinking from it. Very refreshing. There was nothing like that first sip of water after being parched. He returned the bowl back to the cat.
There was something about her. She looked oddly familliar.
"I feel as if we've met", he started, hoping not to sound too strange, "you remind me greatly of someone I used to know."
THe fact that the person he was speaking of was indeed in his past live was something he decided to leave out.
"She was very kind, but a fighter. A protector, mostly," he smile a little bit, "and quite the feminist..."

"I hear that alot." She smile softly and went to her sack to check supplies. She had more than enough Jerky. Yet one can only live on Jerky so long. She had coin but not much. Enough for a room at an inn and one decent meal. She would have to find a quick job. She sighed softly and turned to watched the sun set. It always relaxed her.

"I bet you do..." he said. He had no idea what he meant by that, but it sounded right at the time. Here he was, making a fool out of himself in front of a woman again. This always happened to him. Brave fighter, strong traveler, fierce, competitive, but totally hopeless as soon as a lady was involved. Alas, this is something he would never admit. Far too prideful.
Shaking his head he sat down again and stretched out his legs. That was enough traveling for the day. Although he took a nap, he just felt as though he should stick around for a bit. No need to be hasty.

Bast sat a little ways from him. Trying to figure him out. He seemed like a curious character. "Where are you headed for?" She was headed for Tel-el-kabir. She heard there was work that way. She had learned to be a jack of all trades. She had lost alot of her morals. Yet kept herself from disgraceful activities.

"Nowhere..." he said quietly. This was the truth, "I wander. I like to learn of new places. No home to return to, really. May as well find someplace new. But why settle down if there is so much to see?"
He had been traveling for months now, walking across the lands, sailing through the seas. Always trying something new. He wandered alone, but made friends along the way.

"Ah." She turned to watch the sun set. She felt more alive in the dark. The lion in her allowed her to see much better in the dark. She looked around quietly listening. Then she heard it. Gazelle. She turned to the jackal beside her and placed her finger to her lip. She crouched down on all fours and stalked toward the direction of the heard. One was injured. Back leg. It wouldn't last much longer. She pulled out a dagger soundlessly. She hid behind some desert grass. She aimed for the weakest one. 3....2....1... She bolted out with the speed of a cheetah. The heard startled and tried to get away. She effortlessly caught the injured one and jumping onto the back of it went to slit the throat when it noticed something. The gazelle was with child. She got off and cursed. She went to find one of the males and went after him. It took much more work but she did it. She grabed onto him and one of the horns scraped her side. Cursing again she slit his throat. She allowed the blood to drain as she toook time to breathe and inspect her wound. Not too deep but deep enough she wouldn't be sprinting for a couple weeks. She picked up the carcass and brought it back to where she was stationed before. "Hungry?" She asked as she plopped it down beside the Jackal. She began making a fire out of brush grash and sticks she had in her bag.

"What the hell..." was more or less the only thought going through his head as the lioness attacked the gazelle. This was definitely not something that he saw every day.
He watched, partly in horror, part in fascination. This was wild.
Although, the situation did make him mildly uncomfortable. But how she moved was absolutely amazing to him. Very different than that of a jackal.

When she returned, Sibuna saw the gash on her side. Immediately he began untying some of the bandages that he always kept around his middle.
"Here...wait...dont move too much..."
He quickly handed them over to her, willing to help patch the nasty wound up.
"Those antlers are a bitch, aren't they..."
"Oh, yes... please...." he said, suprised at the offer of food. It was very kind.

"What of the other one," he said, motioning to the first gazelle she hunted, "will it go to waste?"

"She was with child. She will probably live until the birth of her child mostly likely die soon after." She looked at the work he did on her gash. The wound was tied with care yet skill. She began to skin the male gazelle. "My name is Bast."
