A New Ruler, Old Alliance. ((Closed))

Post by Brimstone »

Fenrir swore under his breath as he scampered to get everything ready. The Royalty of the Arctic were coming to Visit and meet with the new king (Two years over due, but that was King Fendrakes fault) and EVERYTHING had to be perfect. These were Domus's greatest ally and if Brimstone screwed this one up then the gods would weep upon the floor at such a damaged political position. The Throne room was dim and Shadowy, just as Brimstone had kept it since he became "sick" and the night was falling. This was perfect, as Brimstone would be actually willing to meet there visitors when they arrived, instead of having them escorted to the Throne Room to look upon the "Throne of Shadows" as some of the commoners who made it to the weekly open court had come to call it.

He rushed over to Brimstone and bowed. "Sire, everything is prepared and our Visitors from the Arctic shall be here soon. Should we not get ready to meet them at the Castle step" Fenrir asked. There was a long chilling silence that cause Fenrir to sweat slightly.

"These guests... Would my Father meet them personally?" The shadows rasped. Anyone who didn't know exactly what was going on with the King would just downright assume he was Sick, but the Palace staff knew otherwise. Some weird things happened in the Kings chambers what was causing this to happen. Something he obsessed over constantly.

"Yes your Majesty! These are the Royals of the Arctic! Your Father usually met them half way!" Fenrir exclaimed, causing a sound of movement to come from the chair. Fenrir quickly ducked his head and apologized, staying the blade that almost killed him. A growl from the shadow was clear "Fine... I shall meet them at the castle step. it's after dusk, and I could stretch my legs" He rasped, standing tall. His height was imposing, standing 6'10" and weighing 310lbs.

He walked swiftly, his cloak making him look like a black shadow as they walked through the castle. It was hard to keep track of the king in the perpetual shadows. There was only enough light in the castle for the servants to see enough for them not to bump into things. The windows in the Throne room were all sealed, plus any window within a hundred yards of the throneroom door to stop light from getting in at any cost.

The two exited the castle, the first few stars just starting to twinkle down. "They best show up soon Fenrir... aAs your head is on the line now" The king rasped dryly.

Stood on the other side of the door was the Tsarina's nosy younger sibling, Agnes, her ear pressed against the door. "They're speaking about something rather seriously. Somethin about "this has to be perfect" and whatnot. We're no less furry than they are, no need for them to be all worried." She drew her ear away from the door, looking back at her elder sibling with a sense of curiosity. "What do they have to be worried about?"

Glistening blue eyes staring back at her sister's own, Deirdre let out a light chuckle. "You'll understand when you're in my shoes. Let yourself be innocent while you are, darling." Her hand gently brushed the top of Agnes' head, earning a slight reflexive duck, as if she were expecting to be hit.

"Right..." She rolled her eyes. "Shall we signal our arrival, then?" Upon receiving a nod from the Tsarina, Agnes lightly rapped her knuckles against the surface of the door. Deirdre gulped a bit. While she was indeed a figure of power and strength on some parts, she was heavily intimidated by the appearance of the structure. Sealed off windows, a slight admission of light, and the energy it gave off itself was frighteningly dark. Her tail swished about nervously, her knees quivering in anxiety. Agnes lightly took her hand. "There is nothing to fear, dear sister. I will sacrifice myself for you above all else if times call for such an action." "Well..." Deirdre exhaled. "Let us pray not."

One of Brimstones large ears twitch. His eyes go wide and he turns around, vanishing into the shadows as he usually does when he is in a hurry. Someone was in his Throne Room, and he did not like that without him being there. He skidded to a silent stop to see that the Winter Countries sent there... Daughters. He slowly walked in and looked at the three of them as they looked around the throne room. "One usually wait's outside the castle for ans escort when visiting another country do they not?" Brimstone asked, coughing violently. His features were hidden by his cloak, but his eyes still shone brightly. All they lacked was that glint of life that was once there.

He slowly walked past the girls and too the throne, where he sat. "Dinner shall be shortly, how are our... friends in the Arctic?" Brimstone asked hoarsely. He looked at the eldest Daughter with a curious look. His memory was blurry, but he could remember this one rather well. Probably from her other visits to the castle when he and her were younger. She was seven years older then him, but he hardly cared at the moment.

"Oh, how unexpected. Thank you, sir. Just out of plain curiosity, what friends do you speak of? There aren't any other royal figures waiting back in the Arctic. I, currently, am the Tsarina. I thought it  would be more professional to appear in the flesh instead of sending an ambassador. I feared that lines would get crossed with secondhand information and whatnot. Agnes, you remember, don't you?"

"Quite clearly. We were told that a meeting had been arranged between you and our head ambassador Ms. Bristle, and she simply said that it was our choice whether or not she was sent. Deirdre and nyself signed a formal agreement and told Bristle it would be not a problem in the slightest for us to come instead."

"She grows weak with age. Her only daughter is deceased and she struggles with raising a grandchild whilst dealing with health issues. Her stamina has decreased and her hearing is impaired. However, I does not prevent her from performing her tasks. I admire her dearly. It's a shame that she may very well pass in our absence."

A solemn look took root across Agnes' features. That bit of news was something she feared for quite some time.

"Pardon my ramblings. You didn't request a sob story, you sent for individuals to have a formal meeting with." Deirdre continued to speak, smoothing out the skirt of her gown as she did so. "So which matters did you wish to discuss?"

Brimstone growled a little in annoyance. "I was under the impression that our two countries were rather good allies. If this is wrong I think I need to speak to my castle staff for misinforming me" He said, standing backup and glaring at Fenrir. The poor dog almost died on the spot due to a heart attack were it not for the Girls in the room he would have actually died.

"But that behind us for the moment, I do believe it is... Dinner. Shall we?" He asked, slowly walking down the hall. With the change in speed one could notice that his walk had changed from it's original strong stride, too looking like his legs could hardly hold him up. One of his legs slipped out of the cloak and the sight was actually kind of scary. The long appendage was no longer it's strong fluffy self but instead it was almost skeletal in appearance and the fur was a sickly oily black.

"Do forgive our recent action" Brimstone hissed, "We have had other concerns over the last two years that stopped us from treating your Ambassador in the manner they so deserved. I do hope we are not upset" He smiled turning to look at Deirdre. Even his teeth were but a ghost of their former self. His Silver Tongue was showing through as he blatantly lied to the Monarch, playing it off perfectly. "Also, forgive me if I am wrong but I seem to remember us spending some time when we were younger. I just can't remember if it were you or one of your siblings" He said, continuing to walk.

((Brimstone has been in the castle for years. He was a fine image of health and had a strong clear voice. He is a hard individual to forget so someone would probably be very confused as to why he is so... sickly I could say.))

Agnes lightly trailed behind her sister at a sort of "servant distance" as the group ventured down the hall for dinner. While the young female had absolutely no problems with other species, Brimstone in particular frightened her to bits. As it is true that they were well-acquainted in their junior years, Agnes still had internal qualms with the king. His demeanor went from friendly and open, to reserved and harsh. And to think that for a minute, as children, Agnes actually became attached to him.

Deirdre opened her mouth to respond to the king's words, closing it shortly after once she felt a hand on her shoulder. "I detect a sense of... Dishonesty. Proceed with caution, sister." Agnes whispered.

Astonished, she nodded. She decided she would deal with the lack of truthfulness later. "You may be remembering all three of us. We were all brought here to visit at different times when we were young. The changing personalities may have confused you at a point. Rest assured, it was simply Agnes, Inuk, and I." A ghost of a smile appeared on her lips.

"Now, these concerns, may you provide specifics? Surely our ambassadors haven't received unfair treatment, there have been no complaints. Perhaps it was just a fluke?"

Brimstone chuckled "Of course. I don't very much so remember much from before the last two years. Changes in personality never really put me off, always found them interesting. Anyway, we are here" He grinned. Servants showed each of the girls to their seat, and took Brimstones cloak from him. Seeing his leg was minor compared to the rest of his body. Brimstone looked like he had the Plague, but the country was assured that he did not contagious, as was any visitor to the country.

His fur was thin and oily, giving him a vile look. His body was thin, his ribs and collar bone showing through from under his fur. Where his iconic leather armor allowed, you could see the signs of open sores on his body which probably caused him all sorts of pain. The fact that he had been like this for the last year and a half at the least was disheartening.

"I believe the cook is making Arctic Cod. I choose the menu for tonight based on some fuzzy memories of long days past. I was fairly sure that it was something you were partial too" He rasped. The way he looked as if he were a hundred years old and with the plague made one wonder how he managed to move without any real signs of a struggle. The servants then started to bring out food, casually placing most food as far away from Brimstone as possible without drawing attention to the action.

Deirdre's eyes lit up like a child's smile n Christmas. Arctic cod had been one of her favorite dishes since she could remember. "What a sweet surprise!" She gently scooted her chair out and went over to Brimstone to give him a friendly hug. "Thank you, love, it's very thoughtful." She complimented. Agnes smiled at the sight. Memories of their childhood flooded back to her.

It was a cool summer's day in Domus. Deirdre, Inuk, and Agnes stood beside their mother, Shuna, listening to her words. "You're all to behave yourselves here, alright? I'll be back for you all in a week." The three young girls smiled and waved goodbye at their mother, entering the castle on their own whims.

"Brimstone!" Inuk childishly called, tackling him in a hug. The young draconic canine laughed in surprise. "Nice to see you too!" "Group hug!" Agnes shouted, Deirdre joining the pile alongside her. Children's laughter echoed through the halls, bringing about the presence of a butler. "Ah, children, perfect timing. The arctic cod as you requested is now prepared. Follow me and you shall be served..."

"Our childhood was so simple and filled with innocence..." Agnes sighed. Reminiscing always made her tear up a little bit. "I doubt Brimstone remembers much of it now, anyway... And the so-called caretakers that arrived soon after." Exhaling deeply, she looked back at Brim and Deirdre. "Probably for the best, anyway." She downed a bit of her wine, and waited on Brimstone's words to break the mild silence.

((It's absolutely okay. I don't mind at all. I sometimes need reminders in plot lines so it works out. Sorry to hear that. I hope you're alright.))

Brimstone smiled at the hug, weakly returning. This was the only time his frailness was actually noticeable. "Yes, I remember a bit... The last two years have been... rough. My memory has been scattered through the expanse of my mind. However, if you remember correctly said caretakers disappeared after a few days. I may have played a part in that" He sneered slyly. He did not like such people in his youth.

"But before we get into too much discussion, let us eat. It is getting late and I'm sure your siblings would like one of our soft beds. I have prepared beds for them and you should you decide to retire. I myself will be up into the night so if you wish to join me then I would be fine with that. I have little work to do tonight." He said Idly as the food was served. Oddly enough, Brimstone wasn't served any.

"I do hope the food is too your liking" He said, taking a bite out if the main serving to prove it wasn't poisoned in his absence of a plate.

"I'm sure that with some help from a close friend or two, you could regain your memory. It hurts me to see you so weak, especially since we were all so close as children." Agnes commented. "I think that would be a splendid thing to do. We'll gladly assist you, Brim." Deirdre returned to her seat and ate part of her meal, the heavy exhaustion from the trip soon catching up with her.

"Thank you for your hospitality, Brim. I'll be retiring now. Before I do, do you need assistance with the dishes?" Deirdre asked. Agnes looked over at Brim, mentally wondering the same. "I'd be happy to help." She added.

((Please forgive the delay. I was running errands.))

Brimstone merely chuckled slightly. "I am sure just basking in the past would give me some temporary enjoyment. However, what are you planning on assisting me with? The few tax sheets that I need to look over and pretend to not ignore?" He growled slightly. "This country was running perfectly when my father owned it, and I changed nothing and I am the tyrant" He snapped, hitting the table in a fury. It was very clear the countries views of him was a rather touchy subject.

"As for the dishes little one, the castle staff will worry about that. You all head to bed" He said before turning to Agnes ((The eldest I think?)) and holding out a bony hand "And you... Would you care to join me for a stroll through the castle grounds? They truly are enchanting in the evening" He smiled. It seemed his old charming habits were coming through, but in the body only a mother could really tolerate...

((Deirdre's actually the eldest, but why not give Agnes some attention? I sometimes ignore her, anyway!))

Agnes gladly accepted Brimstone's hand. "I hardly ever get to enjoy the outdoors back home. I'd love to go on a stroll with you. The night sky, from what I've heard, is beautiful out here." With that said, Agnes got up to leave with Brim, Deirdre staying behind.

"It's sweet how they're bonding again. It almost breaks my heart to think about what she'd gone through to see him before... Through, that's well into past now, I suppose." A long, exasperated sigh escaped her as she slunk into an empty seat at the table. "My God, I wish I could be as joyous as her. All I have are these depressing memories and sleepless nights!" Her angered voice echoed out into the vast darkness of the now empty dining hall. Atop her nest-like folded arms, Deirdre rested her head and allowed herself to weep. Breath hitched and sobs uncontrollable, she wept. Her multiple efforts to quiet herself were in vain.

Whilst trying to handle matters of business, she broke.

((I'm going to... I haven't the faintest idea what to do... But Deirdre sounds like a problem that should be handled later... Or right now by Fenrir...))

Fenrir slipped into the dining room a few minutes after Brimstone and Agnes left to hear crying. Looking around he saw Deirdra with her head on the table weeping and quickly hurried over. Often it would be a vast misstep to touch royalty, especially from another country but Fenrir was old and knew that one would not care about such things.

"Shhh... Now now your Majesty it is alright" He said, sweeping the girl into his arms. He did know what else to do other than to show her comfort, as he didn't know the right questions to ask so he just let her cry till she opened up for him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brimstone led Agnes through the many halls of his castle, before they finally entered his private garden. Vast amounts of plants, all blooming brightly in the moonlight not a single flower was sleeping. His Garden was one to be enjoyed at night, and never during the day.
He Led Agnes through the Garden till they reached the center and he sat her down on a bench as he did when he was a Prince. "I hope your enjoying your evening... I never expected to have company, especially not yours" He rasped, coughing violently in the sudden cold. "I apologize for my appearance... But I guess a decent into anything would not be a pretty sight to see hmm?" He asked in a dry humor, before looking at some of the plants.
Deirdre felt a warm, gentle pair of arms wrap around her. Instantly, she felt better knowing that there was somebody to comfort her. "I do not know why you wish to hold me so close now, and often people are told not to touch royalty..." She took a breath and allowed herself to calm down. "But I admire your willingness to comfort me anyway. Thank you... As I don't want to bother you with my troubles so late, I'll be heading to my room now. I'll be happy to speak with you tomorrow, though."
She stood up and bowed to him slightly.
"Goodnight, Fenrir."
---------------
Agnes emitted a soft chuckle. She did enjoy a good laugh. "Now, now, you, don't say things like that. Every soul is beautiful, regardless of the host. You are as beautiful to me as the night sky itself. I love you as you are, and as you'll become." Agnes enveloped Brimstone in a light hug. "I always have..."
Fenrir just returned the Bow. "Not to worry your Highness, I have survived since the beginning in our Majesties presence, I am sure chancing a friendly hug to comfort one is the least of my worries" He said kindly. "I will however be waiting for that talk should you still need it. I shall never be to busy for one such as yourself" He said as she left, returning to the servants quarters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Brimstone kept his face forward as she spoke. She had a way of stirring up feelings withing Brimstone, but this time was different. His memory became clear around her, but a part of his mind forced his memories back down cause he didn't want to deal with them. The hug though... The hug sent him mind into a blind panic, causing him to tear away from her roughly and take a few steps away.

"Do... Not... Touch me" He growled, a low feral growl that was nothing like his voice at any time, even when he became angry at dinner. His body seemed to shudder with an internal battle before he took a deep breath. "I'm sorry... I need to compose myself. I shall be in my room if anyone should need me..." He said, his voice the clean crisp voice he had in the past as he suddenly vanished.

One would be able to beat him to his room, if they remembered the secret way only he and his close friends knew...
