Arctic Vacation

Some one-thousand years into the future, Feila is now ruled by pop-crazy teenagers, computer nerds, and gun-wielding gangsters. This period is most like our present day Earth, specifically the 2000's, with the Internet, MP3 players, and towering skyscrapers. All natives are furry (Skin Avian are present here too). No native humans.

Wakia bit her lip softly. It was then her father spoke, "We have a long time dear child. You have your whole life. You are less than half our age. You should go see the world while you are still young enough to appreciate it." Barius leaned down and smiled at Malcom. "I said I've seen this world. I'd much rather stay home where I can be a carpenter."

The barimaid returned with their food. leaving it on the table, she moved on to another table. Barius picked up his plate, and began eating. As he was munching away, he looked at another table. There was a panther there. A tall male, black fur. His orange eyes seemed to regard Barius with respect before he returned to his own food. The father looked and nodded, raising his glass at the male, before turning back to his own food. "So, tell me Malcom, you are a military man. Where have you been?"

Malcom chuckled as he replied to Barius. "carpenter...never would have guessed. I don't think I'm quite ready to settle into something like that though."

When the food came, he waited to make sure everybody had their meal before he started eating. He made not of the panther, and the exchange between him and the others at the table. He swallowed before he replied to question he had been asked. "I was a military man, demolitions and weapons specialist." He said with a bit of a smile. "I spent some time here in the arctic for cold weather operations training. Spent quite a bit of time in Piriqui, some time in Kahun and Maze....Domus." He paused for a moment as if making a mental list. "and Yamaha...technically." He finished the list. "Though, now I'm trying to get back to each of them to visit at a much more leisurely pace." He finished with an enthusiastic grin.

the father nodded, "Seen a lot of those places, long time ago myself. I....I've had my fill of this world. See too much conflict in it. I like it here. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's nothing against the people. Its the ideals. Religions, principles, thoughts and visions that cause the problems. I believe in variety, equality, and happiness for all. But there is no religion that preaches equality for all, no principle that is even all around, no vision that isn't twisted somewhere. I think I'll spend the rest of my days here in the land of ice and snow. Here I can do better, I can work on cars. Good, honest work." The older ferret seemed to have some spunk left in him. His wife gently patted his paw, "Plenty of time dear. We have plenty of time."

Wakia was quietly eating, though she glanced at Malcom on occasion. Barius nodded softly, and smiled at his parents. "Aye. A few thousands years old isn't too bad. Pops here, he's durn....what tis it now? 12,000 years old?" The father made a displeased face at his son, but did not correct or chide him. The mother smiled softly, "He's only 6000 years old. And our little Wakia is only 150 years old. They are but children. Think not so ill of their honesty love." The gruff old ferret let out a sigh and smiled, "yes. it is true. I suppose it's not much of a secret up here. Most know what and who we are, as most of the residents ARE angels. Though we do enjoy the presence of mortals. It's a never ending circus, this life. And variety of life is wonderful to behold. It seems we both have traveled, Sir Malcom. I believe the only place I have not set foot in was Gawain. We stayed clear of there for the most part. The there side of the line held that area down for us." Barius laughed, "Ya, there's one of them now. Happy chap for moving into such balmy cold. Never seen a panther this far north in all my life. But he likes it, he says. Likes the crunch of the snow under his boots and the feel of crisp fresh air in his whispers. Aye hes an odd one then."

Malcom smiled, Wakia's parents had a wonderful charm about them that he was thoroughly enjoying. Malcom's mouth dropped open when he heard their age though, not because it was a surprise, but because it was hard to fathom living for that amount of time. He sat there wondering what he would do with himself if he lived for that long. He closed his mouth, and looked at Wakia. It couldn't be too bad with the right company to pass it with though; he amended his thoughts. He chuckled before replying. "always something new to learn in this life if you want to." He nodded as Gawain was mentioned. "a place I do plan to visit eventually." He looked at the panther again, wondering exactly what was meant by 'the other side'. "I would think he would have been a bit conspicuous in Gawain.....especially in earlier ages, what with the old racism" he mused before going back to his food, and taking a few bites. He glanced at Wakia before smiling and commenting. "great food. so...a hundred and fifty years huh. I've always heard that older women had an appeal to them." He teased, with a wink and a grin, though he hoped he didn't overstep...

Wakia turned red as a beet. Her brother laughed softly, as did her father. Her mother giggled from behind a paw. Barius finally grabbed a chair and turned it backward. Sitting in it, he motioned to the panther. "That there is one of them high ranking Tamiko Clan. Big to-do they are. Oh they ain't snobby. but Laddy they got them some strange ways. Suppose tis expected. Being a family of succubi and incubi. Yup. That'un there is an incubus laddy. And a right powerful one. Dont rightly know why he decided to settle up here."

Wakia took the moment while the subject was changed to calm herself down. She brushed a lock of hair out of her face and went about eating. As she was taking her meal, she noticed there was a draft coming from the door. It was partially open. Someone was on the other side. After a moment the door opened and in walked another villager. He paid no mind to anyone, just headed for the bar and took a seat. Wakia returned to her meal, though the shiver had already passed through her.

Malcom felt a little guilty at embarrassing Wakia, though he was glad a little light teasing didn't upset her. Barius sitting down wasn't expected, and caught Malcom's attention when he started speaking. "Tamiko clan..hmm" Something about the name seemed vaguely familiar, like he had heard it somewhere before, but he dismissed the idea and continued to listen. "important family, and he wants to hang out here...to each his own I suppose." He commented, the power of demons and angels meant little to him as long as they weren't after his hide. He had never seen their power displayed so he had no reference to instill any kind of awe or fear. He shivered as well as the draft went through the building. He caught a glimpse of Wakia shivering as well, which surprised him more than anything considering how comfortable she had been in the cold earlier in the day. He watched the villager enter as well, though mostly to find out who was letting in all the cold air. "it's getting cold, good thing the hotel is right across the street." He commented as he returned to his meal.

As they ate, The parents talked about things they were doing or wanted to do. most seemed so mundane. Go fishing, take a day off, go walking to the lake and take some time to go ice skating. They were fairly ordinary. Then the father looked up, He smiled as the door opened and Agreal and Amadeas entered. The pair seeming to be rather joyous. Then the barkeep called out, "Have a good day you two?" Amadeas called back as Agreal headed for a corner table, "Fairly! There was this man came in! Placed an order for a suit. Rather nice man, handsome and well dressed. Can't wait to finish this project." The barkeeper laughed and moved out to go talk to the wolf and fox.

Wakia smiled to herself, and her mother caught on. "Oh? Ordering suits from our local tailors eh Malcom? That's very nice. Most people don't even pay attention to the town. They come to vacation and see the tourist sights. Then they leave. Very few take in our culture." The father nodded as he sipped his drink, "Would you care to learn a bit about our wood craft before you go. I could show you some things."

Malcom sat and listened happily to the discussion between Wakia's parents. The conversation may have been mundane but it was comforting to hear such conversation from time to time, it helped keep one grounded. He smiled as Amadeas, and Agreal walked in, and wasn't surprised to see them. He figured one could probably see most of the local population in the establishment at some point or another on any given night.

Malcom smiled when the conversation turned to his purchases of the day. "they do fine work, and it never hurts to be dressed for success in a good poker tournament." He replied "I always prefer to do more than just see the sights when I travel, finding someone local who's willing to show you around and give you insights always leads to a richer experience I think. Plus you never know when you might hit it off with someone" he said shooting, a quick glance at Wakia. "I would love to learn what you have to teach." He continued. "I'm always eager to learn something new."

Wakia about turned blood red. Her eyes flashed softly, almost a glow before it faded. Her mother smiled softly. "Well now. I think it's a wonderful thing to learn more. There is always something to learn. Broaden your horizons I say." The father nodded softly as he sipped his drink. The old ferret looked around a bit before he stood. "I think I shall go and fetch us something more to drink." He headed to the bar as Barius stretched. "Aye, I think I'm going to move for my bed. I need um a bit of sleep laddy." HE finished his drink and set the glass down. Polishing off his food in a few bites he set the plate down and stretched. "You take care laddy. I seeum you in the morrow!" He headed for the door. No jacket, or cover from the cold. As he hurried out the door and shut it, Wakia spoke, "I believe I'll stay up and have a drink. It has been an eventful day."

Her tail swayed softly as her father returned. The ferret sat at the table with an old bottle and a few glasses. "Here, this takes the chill off anyone's bones. Careful now, not too fast. Might knock you from your chair." He fixed the four of them a glass. Then he leaned back and enjoyed his own. "Mmmm Cordial Brandy, 1823. A fine year."

Malcom couldn't help but think Wakia looked rather cute blushing like she did. "I agree." he replied to Wakia's mother with a large grin. He was a little surprised when Barius decided to take off. "have a good night, see you later" He replied to Barius as the ferret headed off. He shook his head a bit, the decision to take off had seemed a little abrupt to Malcom, but he didn't dwell on it, not with enjoyable company still sitting next to him. "I can drink to that" He replied to Wakia, still smiling. "an all around enjoyable day." He said as Wakia's father returned. Malcom's eyes widened a bit as the age of the bottle he brought was mentioned "certainly not." He replied "a brandy that old, definitely not something to be chugged." He said with a smile as he took a glass, and holding it under his nose to take in the scent before holding it out in front of him. "To life, learning, and a chance encounter of a lifetime." he said, not caring one bit how cheesy it may have sounded before he took a sip of the brandy. "mmm..." he murmured with appreciation before he swallowed.

Wakia toasted as well. As she settled into her seat, nursing her brandy, her mother spoke softly. "It has been many years since we shared a meal with a visitor to our lands. We may yet invite you to stay longer." The father nodded as he leaned into his chair some. "Indeed. There is much to explore in our world. Perhaps I can take up my rifle and bow, and we may go hunting." Wakia grinned, "Father...hunting season is not but thre weeks away. Malcom would be gone by then. When we return he could." Her mother smiled softly, taking a sip of her drink.

After a bit some laughter rang out from where Amadeas and Agreal were seated. The fox stretched out and leaned on his wolf. The wolf was laughing at something the barkeeper had said. The barkeeper laughed back, talking in the Arctic tongue and roaring in laughter. Some sort of joke as the three enjoyed a meal. Everyone seemed to laugh and chat willingly. It was then the panther stood and moved toward the wolf and fox. Taking a seat with them he joined in the conversation. He seemed to know the language well, his own laughter joining in. It made his dreadlocks dance and bob.

Malcom chuckled. "While I am certainly not adverse to spending more time here, it may have to wait till previous engagements back in Edwin are taken care of." He replied with a smile. "I would definitely love to come back and go hunting." He chuckled again "Though I gotta warn you...while I'm a crack shot with a rifle, I'm abysmal with a bow." He nursed his drink all the while. The laughter on the other side of the room caught his attention. "Sounds like they're having a good time." He commented as he sat back. He had to admit to himself that whenever he decided he was ready to settle down, this wouldn't be too bad a place to do it; everybody so far had been pretty pleasant, especially those he had had the chance to know better than just the quick initial meeting.

The ferret laughed softly, "Oh we have used rifles for ages. but we keep the old traditions alive. We want everyone to know a bit of our history." Wakia smiled softly and looked at Malcom. She could see the wheels turning in his head. But she kept to herself as she sipped her drink. After a bit she spoke, "So....how does one play poker?" Her mother shook her head. "Not something I was ever interested in. Ask your father." The old male shook his head as well, "I play with my friends on the weekends, and even then we don't play for money. I barely know the rules myself." She looked at Malcom. "Want to teach me?" she asked.

Malcom chuckled. "There are far better archers than me that prefer a bow for hunting." he commented. "Who am I to say it's the wrong way to go if it works for them." he continued. The subject of poker came up next, and Malcom grinned. "Poker is actually a general term for quite a few different card games, though they do follow the same basic premise. I'd love to teach you." He replied to Wakia. "the first and most important thing you'll need to know is what a poker hand is, what kind you can get, and how they're ranked." He pulled a deck of cards from a pocket and shuffled them. "now, a poker hand consists of five cards, while the particular game may involve more cards, your had will always be five cards in the end" he explained.

Wakia leaned in to listen better while the elder couple watched with mild interest. It was to be educational. But still enjoyable over a pint. The father refilled his cup and his wife's. Enjoying a bit of fellowship as this made them smile.

Wakia was facinated by the game. Watching the cards as Malcom explained the basic premise of the game. "So. Five cards for my hand. Ok I think I under stand that."
