Feilan Meta-plot: Episode 1 - Shattered Maze

Post by Rackenhammer »

Announcing: The beginning of the Feilan Meta-Plot!

This is essentially a way of getting all of you involved in this world; the actions your characters take in each of these events can influence the shape of the World of Feila. The plot will consist of "Episodes" taking place within a certain Kingdom's board. All threads within that board may be legitimately considered as an influence upon the outcome of the event, arbitrated by the current player who holds the Monarch Position of that Kingdom.

Board: The Kingdom of (Shattered) Maze
Arbiter: Sade.

Feilan Metaplot Episode 1 Conclusion:

Macro-political results:

While the Rebellion quickly maintained a domestic advantage in terms of follower loyalty and amount of territory under control, the famine situation left it as desperate for resources as the Kingdom. Ultimately, the deciding factor would turn out to be each side’s ability to court international recognition and support.

In this, the Rebellion had two large disadvantages: first, no monarch would want to support a precedent of violent usurpation. Second, the Warlord had early on allied herself with a xenophobic religious organization, the Iglesia de Santo Ratos, which had very early on alienated all non-rodents. The biggest coup that Warlord Galvarez was able to manage was winning the support of the avians by pledging to fight the Edwinian slave trade.

Meanwhile, the Arctic Islands, Yamaha, and Domus had adopted a “paws-off” approach, while Kahun remained equally hostile to both. The two largest military powers, Edwin and Gawain, both came to the aid of the Kingdom, with each of their monarchs sending their best diplomatic representatives: Freya and Miles von Wexlar, respectively.

Thanks to Miles’ encouragement, King David Bree was able to politically maneuver himself out from under the control of the nobility, which subsequently led to the foiling of an assassination plot against him conspired by one of the Dukes. A leadership purging and reform, along with drawing up reserves from the coast now that a Gawainian invasion was off the table, bolstered the loyalist army to the point where it could face the rebels on a more even keel.

Meanwhile, Edwin established it’s own military beachhead, opening up a war on two fronts. Realizing that a military victory was now quite a good deal harder to accomplish, Galvarez sent out overtures of peace, while covertly developing advanced siege weaponry, specifically Feila’s first black powder cannon.

Divisions had been opening up in the Rebel ranks, specifically between the fanatics of the Iglesia, and those who secretly had stayed loyal to the Orthodox Trinitarian church. The Gawainian and Loyalist diplomats were able to make use of this, pointing out to the Warlord that the Iglesia would only serve to divide and weaken Maze in the long run. Miles was able to forge a new alliance between the King and Warlord against the recalcitrant nobles and the fanatical Iglesia.

One of the conditions of the pact, however, was that Gawain would back Galvarez’ promise to the Avians, by giving naval support against the Edwinian merchant marines. Thus, naturally, Edwin was against the new alliance. However, since King Gavin wasn’t really enamored with either the xenophobic fanatics or greedy nobles, he wasn’t going to lend them much of a hand. Besides, he didn’t think Maze worth opening a full-scale war against his biggest neighbor. So, he ordered a retreat of his forces, along with heavy sanctions and tariffs on Maze. It was later discovered that the local military commander had also sowed the fields with salt, though whether he was on orders no one knows. More explosive booby-traps had also been laid, which made it very easy for Miles to convince the Mazans that Edwin had never really been their friend.

The new alliance was able to take the field against its divided enemies, and carry it. The very hour that the united forces of the King and the Warlord broke the lines of the Iglesian Inquisitors, the storm fronts broke the long drought, heralding the end of the Famine.

Most of the hard-line nobles either died in battle, or fled the country. The great Basilica of Salamanca de Santo Ratos, on the advice of Miles, was not destroyed, but completed and consecrated as a Cathedral of the Orthodox Trinitarian Church. The Iglesia de Santo Ratos was finished as a major movement, with its prophet Eloy Vargas dead, and without even a ruin to venerate.

The final treaty, brokered at he end of the war, left Maze with two heads of State. First was the King, David Bree, upholding the hereditary monarchy and backed by the remaining nobles, and the Tribune Galvarez, representative of the common rodents. While in theory each has equal power over the realm of Maze, with civil and military duties divided respectively between them, both acknowledge a more geographic division of power, with David Bree holding most of the South and Coasts, while Celia Galvarez holds the North and Heartland. However, they both respect each other, and present a united front before foreign representatives.

Now comes the task of rebuilding the country’s internal infrastructure and international credit. All combatants who survived were granted amnesty by King David, to prevent flare-ups of hostilities again. While the war has torn up most of the countryside, it has also driven many alchemical innovations to a point unparalleled in the rest of Feila, with possibilities for development ripe, now that the country can feed itself.
Edwin may have closed off its trade, but Gawain is more than willing to pick up the slack, and many merchants foresee profitable investments that are open to ground-floor backers. The neutral nations may now also find the markets open to them, though not at nearly so favorable a rate.

Micro-Political Consequences:

While the Trinitarian Church maintains its old level of influence over Catalonia, which it held against the Rebels, its institutional presence and influence elsewhere has diminished, especially in the political sphere. New monastic orders, the Friars, have embraced their vows of poverty, and live as beggars to serve the spiritual needs of their rebuilding country, while the older orders who have survived the persecutions are returning Church lands to cultivation.

Most of the city-states who declared their independence were later brought back into line, except for the city of Merida. Thanks an alliance to one of the original invading Gawainian Battalions taking refuge there, the ruler of the city, Lady Almontadilla, was able to maintain a strong hold over the local area. The fortunate finding of a magical artifact of great power, as well as a rich vein of very strong metal, clinched their security.
Eventually, the Gawainian Brigadier married the Mazan Lady, who granted land to all the soldiers who would stay. The city maintains its sovereign status under the name Merida-Kreuzberg, and many of the ships promised to back Galvarez against the merchant marines now have their home port there. The city has gained a sizable Gawainian element to its local culture, and serves as a bridge to the strengthening ties between the two countries.

Several other political entities have been able to leverage the recent instability to buy more independence and privileges in exchange for loyalty to the new Alliance government. A large group of tarantula clans, traditionally working as sellswords for the Kingdom, bargained with the warlord for land and gold in exchange for lending their wisdom and skill in crafting machines of war. When the new Alliance was brokered, they still honored the bargain they made with Galvarez, while making another with King David, essentially being paid twice for the same war.
With these profits, they could now permanently establish themselves in the Mazan military complex, albeit more as contractors than enlisted troops. Still, the more warlike are always ready to lend a blade if blood is to be had, and no one actually got around to melting down the war machines...

I've always had a fondness for the kingdom of Maze and the line of Willis Bree, so I had hoped to be involved in the Maze portion of this subplot. It looks like I just missed it, though. When does the next portion of the arc begin in Yamaha?
