Private Lessons

Feila is now home to a wide range of advanced technology that makes Earth's present day computers look like children's toys. Sentient androids walk the streets as free citizens, robots have taken over much of the industrial work, and the youth surf the streets on hover boards. Medicine has become so advanced that the disabled can be fitted with cybernetic limbs, while those seeking super strength can find said technology on the black market. Politics have shifted greatly, and Edwin has become a cold and controlling authoritarian state, with each of the remaining nations changed in its own manner. All natives are furry (Skin Avian are present here too). No native humans.

(ugh...sorry. I hope you didn't have to go back and rewrite it.)

Freya nodded when Kolin mentioned staying in cabins for the night. She had nothing against roughing it, but she wasn’t about to turn down amenities. “Sounds like a plan then.” She commented in reply.

She couldn’t help but chuckle at the answer Kolin gave to her question of how he managed the greater load of his pack. That, and a more thorough look his aura confirmed that it had been something of the innate variety rather than something done consciously.

She easily followed Kolin through the city to find thermals to carry them ever higher into the sky. As they caught favorable winds, something else came to mind as an exercise for Kolin to try as they made their way toward their destination. There was something else she wanted to ask her companion first though.

“So, if you don’t mind my asking. What did you tell your parents about this trip? That is if you told them anything I suppose.”

"Have you ever tried to effect the winds while you fly?" She asked. "Or perhaps creating a bubble of calm when you run into turbulent air?"

Kolin shrugged, a maneuver of no small dexterity when airborne. "I left a note saying that I was going out to the woods for a few days with you. Part of the reason we're dropping by the cabins is for verisimilitude. Now, I expect I'll have to be much more elaborate when we get back, but who knows."

Her next question puzzled him, though not because he couldn't answer it. "No." It was simple enough, but the question was so obvious he had to think for a while why he never had tried to manipulate the air while flying. "It's like... trying to walk, by levitating pieces of the ground up to meet you. I suppose you could do it, but... it makes you think about things you're actually bad at if you think about them. You don't try to oil a bicycle wheel while you're pedaling, either." He didn't feel it the best articulation, but it was as clear as he could make his thought process. "Plus... I've never had it that bad from turbulence, anyway."

Freya chuckled as Kolin explained what he had told his parents about their trip, but more specifically, how he had done it. “Well, I suppose that’s one way to avoid questions and discussions before leaving.” She replied. “Though I won’t be surprised to learn they had plenty for you when we get back.” She continued with a wink. “And all the more reason to make it to those cabins today.”

She tilted her head a bit at his reply to her questions on using magic to aid his flights. “I suppose it could be like that.” She replied in thoughtful tones. “Though I always looked at it more like adding a turbocharger, and air ride suspension to a good car.” She commented, without thinking about the archaic nature of her analogy. “You don’t really need to have either, but they can make for a quicker and more comfortable ride.” To emphasize her point, she summoned a strong tail wind to fill her wings, and propel her forward ahead of Kolin. She eventually slowed down and matched speeds with him again once they were alongside each other again.

She grinned at him. “It’s also another opportunity to use your magic in different ways. The more creative you can be with it, the less any opponent will be able to counter anything you’re trying to do.”

The historically-minded Kolin did in fact catch the reference to archaic technology. Car culture was another one of those dead cultural tropes so beloved by Edwinian historians, most of whom came from the intellectual class who despised the hicks that clung to their gas guzzlers. Irony was lost among a certain breed of scholars. Though not on the hybrid, who had a flat expression just full of it as he replied, "Well, when I see you performing that little operation on said antique while driving it, then maybe I'll monkey around with my aerodynamics."

The dragoness wasn't currently in a car, but did the next best thing on short notice by summoning a timely tailgust. He still looked a little skeptical as he slowly caught up, feeling as if she were offering the equivalent of training in self-appendectomies. Nonetheless, he couldn't deny that it worked. "Hm... maybe later, when we're less burdened."

Freya chuckled at Kolin’s skepticism. “Of course, if you leaned toward telekinesis I’d show you the trick of latching a tether to a mountain, and pulling yourself to get more speed” She commented. She grinned as Kolin at least acknowledged that her idea may warrant a try.

She was quiet for a while, just enjoying the sights and feelings of flying, and having the air fill her wings. Eventually she spoke again. “So, you were fairly quiet through the majority of our call with Zeke.” She prompted. “You never did say how you felt about having a fellow student.” She looked over at him, watching carefully for reactions. “How do you feel about all this?” She asked.

By this point, the pair were beginning to exit the skyspace of Bayreuth city proper. A huge emphasis on vertical engineering and land use maximization over the past century in Gawain had more or less tamed urban sprawl, but in central metropoli like this one the damage had been done already. Suburbs spread across the surface of the earth for miles out, fernlike featherings following the major rail lines in and out of the city. Many of these had once been the middle-or-upper-class residences of the early 21st century, but time had not been kind to the neighborhoods. At best, they were preserved in a kind of working-class mode of provincialism, and at worst nature was fighting a winning battle of attrition against artificial infrastructure.

It was while he glided over a canopy of trees breaking through the roofs of a townhouse row that Kolin answered. "You know, I'm not sure. It's not like I haven't met magical strangers before, or even made common cause with them. I mean, we were strangers once. But, well, most of my education was private, one-on-one tutoring. Having a fellow pupil is new to me."

He was quiet for a few more seconds before answering Freya again. "It also makes we want to make the most of any time alone we have. We've joked about being flirtatious with each other, but... well, I won't say I haven't thought seriously about it, either."

Freya watched the change in the landscape below them, and found herself reminiscing on how the land had looked in her youth. She found a certain bit of joyous satisfaction in seeing nature reclaiming the landscape. Though she desperately wished the party had not decided to go the completely opposite direction in Edwin. So much of the natural beauty had be paved and concreted over. She sighed at these thoughts, lamenting not for the first time, over what had happened to the land she had called home for so long.

Kolin’s answer brought her out of her thoughts. She smiled as he mentioned his luck with magical strangers and that having a fellow student was a new concept. “Well, one other student shouldn’t be too bad. I don’t foresee having any problems splitting my attention.” She attempted to reassure him.

His next statement came as a small surprise though. Her smile widened before she spoke again. “Well…seems to me, someone mentioned a flight through the city and an expensive dinner.” She mused. “I wouldn’t turn that down; if you’d be interested in an actual date.” She mentioned with an air of innocence. “See how it goes, and maybe you can have me all to yourself after lessons are over on any given day.” She tossed the idea out on the field, and now she was fully expecting, or at least hoping for Kolin to pick it up and run with it.

"Oh, I have full confidence in your ability as a teacher." Kolin hasten to reassure her between wing-flaps. "It's my ability as a student that I'm uncertain of. I don't have a demonstrated ability to work well with others, at least, not right off the bat." How warranted this social insecurity was Freya would have to judge for herself; it probably came from Kolin's lack of experience in making friends or productive colleagues rather than any real lack of ability on his part.

Indeed, the dragoness was quickly acting to counter any negative sense of his own social skills, if her practically agreeing to a first date was any indication. "Sounds like a plan! Would be a good way to cap off our trip when we return to Bayreuth." He was grinning, attempting to play it cool, but unable to tamp down a bit of anticipatory excitement.

The flight continued through the day, with evening beginning to set just as the Dresden foothills were starting to push the ground up to meet them. The cabins were... not exactly abandoned, one or two light-flyers and hover cars were there as well. Apparently Kolin wasn't the only technocrat itching to get out of the city for the summer. He sighed upon seeing them. "I recognize one of those. I've probably been dragged to meet all these furs at my parent's parties, now that I think about it. In an attempt to set me up, no doubt. Looks like mutter is going to hear about us sooner than later."

Freya smiled at Koklin’s reassurances; it was nice to know he had confidence in her abilities. She nodded as he voiced his doubts about his own abilities to work with another. “I think you’ll do fine.” She replied. “You caught my interest easily enough.” She finished with a grin.

She grinned when Kolin took the chance she’d offered. She was looking forward to the chance at sparking of something more romantic in her relationship with Kolin than it had been so far. “Wonderful, I look forward to it.” She replied

She frowned a bit when the cabins came into view, and it was obvious that the pair would not be alone in their visit. The fact that they would have company threw a wrench into her ideas for the evening. She sighed to herself and thought Oh Well. At least, it seemed she wasn’t alone in her disappointment as Kolin sighed as well. “Well, at least you know them in some capacity.” She replied when Kolin mentioned recognition. “I suppose we’ll have to keep magic to ourselves for the evening.” She looked over at him and tilted her head a bit when he mentioned his mother. “You think they’re going to report back to her?” She asked “Does this mean we play the part of couple, or just friends?” She wasn’t quite sure how Kolin wanted to present the situation to these unexpected interlopers. She was perfectly fine with no act at all as well, but since it was Kolin’s home life that would be directly affected by whatever was perceived, she deferred to him on what to show.

Kolin sucked a breath through his teeth, but was not long in giving an answer. "We'll tell them that we've started dating, which is technically true. I mean, we just agreed to our first, right? No need to say anything else; it'll keep the rumor mill at least somewhat honest." Whether that rumor mill would stay within the relatively restricted technocratic circle or not, he couldn't tell. Depended on if news sites had anything more interesting to talk about...

Flashing Freya one last reassuring grin, he dove in for a landing, dropping off the overnight bag before setting down on his feet with a grunt. His limbs always felt heavy after a long flight, and now he knew the reason was that he was dissipating the magic which helped to lift him. Stretching in the sun, he mopped his brow as he saw one of the rich trippers approach. She was a vixen, hot pink, and with a figure and complexion at such a level of perfection that it could not possibly be natural. Kolin knew for a fact that it was not, since the last party he'd been dragged to had featured her pouring praises of her latest body-mod surgeon.

"Oh, *Kollie*, did you hear I would be coming?" Damnit, that vixen had to know how much that pet name annoyed him, but the hybrid kept his tone civil, for the sake of keeping out of trouble.

"No, Yvette, I'd been hoping to make a private trip out to the western woods." Looking over his shoulder to see if Freya had landed yet, he made an introductory gesture. "Freya, this is Yvette, her father is one of the leading lights in metallurgical engineering."

The vixen's eyes grew wide at the sight of the dragoness. "Wow, girl, who does your mods and do they have appointments available? I'd been thinking I was about due for a makeover."

Freya chuckled at Kolin’s response to the question of how to portray their relationship. “That works for me.” She replied. “We don’t have to worry about sticking to any complicated story that way either.” She laughed when Kolin commented on keeping the rumor mill honest. “It won’t stay that way long.” She told him through her laughter.

She watched as Kolin dove for the ground. Once she’d seen where he planned to land, she followed in behind. With several heavy wing beats, Freya lightly touched down behind Kolin. She landed just as the vixen approached; just in time to hear her greeting to Kolin, and take in his reaction.

Freya smiled politely as Kolin introduced her. “A pleasure.” She commented with a continued smile. “Metallurgical engineering…interesting.”

She raised an eyebrow at Yvette’s question. Her voice held certain notes of pity as she responded. “Nature sweetie. I am as I have been since my body reached maturity.” A small puff of smoke issued from her nostrils almost as if to emphasize the point that she was in fact a natural born dragon. She stood tall, and with her head held high as she spoke. “I have no desire to modify myself.” She finished in tones that made it clear she was rather confident in her body the way it was. A certain part of her wanted to get under the vixen’s skin the way she had so quickly gotten under Kolin’s.

She turned her attention back to Kolin. “Well, seems that we won’t have the place to ourselves. I would like to get settled in though if you’re not opposed to the idea.” She suggested with a smile, ready to follow Kolin.

Yvette blinked at Freya's pitying tone, before breaking out into a guffaw that suggested her original species had been something along the donkey line. "Eehawha! You're having a laugh, aren't ya? Nobody's born with nasal smokers. Good ob on you getting them to work on ya without getting choked out though." Clearly, this vixen was not one to disprove the stereotype of the dense rich, and Kolin's slight eye-roll indicated that he really held out no hope for her. "Seriously, though, Kollie, why didn't you tell anyone you were into the scalies? It's the 22nd century, we wouldn't judge!"

A frighteningly plausible image of Yvette as an artificial model lizard popped into Kolin's head, and he gave a sigh. "I've told you this before, schwatzschmidt, until they make brain-mods, you have less than zero chances with me."
Despite the disparaging tone and the frankly insulting words, Yvette only brayed again. "Oh yeah, you're always so funny! I don't know why you're not out at more parties, you're always a hoot!"

The absolute density of the vixen drained any of the hybrid's will to trade wits, it was like fencing with a block of lard. "I think you're right, Freya; it's been a long flight, and we've got another in the morning. If you'll excuse us..." Not caring how brusque he came off, Kolin took the dragoness by the elbow towards one of the empty cabins.

"And that's why I've stayed single all these years." He whispered in a low tone as they made their departure. "Yvette's pretty close to the worst, but she's not atypical. I wonder, honestly, if that kind of stupidity isn't adaptive in some way. If one is too dumb to perceive meaninglessness in one's life, one is saved from suicidal ideation. It's a niche that exists only in an affluent society."

Freya furrowed her brows, and tilted her head a bit as Yvette suggested that she had somehow gotten implants to produce smoke. “You’ve apparently never met a true dragon before.” She replied. She was a little appalled at Yvette’s demonstrated lack of tact, and apparent lack of sense. “I should think Kolin’s attractions are nobody’s business but his own.” She replied when Yvette mentioned him being ‘into scalies’.

She was a little surprised at Kolin’s response. It was blunt, and a little harsh. Yvette’s reply dropped her jaw though. She stood there gaping for a moment as she processed just how vapid the vixen was. After a moment she blinked, closed her mouth, and shook her head. She gave Kolin a brief glance that seemed to ask ‘is this girl for real?’

She gave a slightly relieved smile and nodded when Kolin agreed that they get settled and led her away from the vixen she was quickly beginning to think may contribute more to the world as a pile of charred cinders. “I am sorry you’ve been forcibly subjected to that.” She replied with sympathy as Kolin explained that Yvette, and those like her were not uncommon. “I find it hard to fathom that leading minds of this age suffer their children to be like that. I’d be absolutely appalled if my children acted like that.” She continued, shaking her head as they made their way to the cabin. “I’m also willing to wager that she’s already started the rumor mill turning by this point.” She commented with the slightest chuckle.

Still holding the bags, Kolin kicked open the door to the cabin. The act made a rather satisfying bang, and seemed to blow off a bit of steam for the hybrid. "I'm sorry I had to share that part of my life with you, if it comes to that. I was probably a little too mean to her, to tell you the truth. Just because someone can't feel pain doesn't excuse you for punching them, you know?" He still smiled around the mouth, but it didn't reach his eyes this time.

Dropping his bag, he gave his first good post-flight stretch, popping a few joints as he rolled his neck. "If Yvette were her father's heir, she'd be downright scandalous. But that role falls to her brother; I suppose her parents felt more comfortable only having one brain capable of scheming for the inheritance. Intra-family conflict over corporate shares has proved to be the downfall of several technocrat houses. In fact," All remaining traces of his smile dropped from his face, "If you catch me in a cynical mood, I'd suspect that she did have her brain modded. Just in the wrong direction."

Sighing, he dropped to the bed, at first in a sitting position, before fatigue sent him onto his back, limbs and wings splayed. "As for the rumors, feh! I'd get right on justifying them if I weren't so worn out." The smile returned to his face again, as he turned his head to look at Freya. "How are you feeling?"

Freya shrugged as Kolin apologized for the situation they’d just escaped. “Nothing to apologize for. It’s not your fault.” She replied as she set her own bag down out of the way. “I suppose, but I can’t really blame you for retaliating to her lack of tact.

She watched as Kolin stretched, and listened as he continued to give more details about Yvette. While the vixen’s behavior had been a bit appalling, the idea that her family may have wanted her that way was downright disgusting to her. “That’s terrible. I would hope that nobody would do something like that to their own child.” She shook her head in an attempt to banish the idea from her thoughts, though she had to admit that Kolin’s theory made a terrible kind of sense in a way.

She put her hands above her head, spread her wings, and arched her back in a stretch of her own as Kolin sat down on the bed. She smiled, and gave a soft chuckle when Kolin mentioned working on justifying the rumors. She was thankful for the change in subject. She rolled her shoulders and folded her wings as he asked how she was feeling. “Well…” She started. “I’m definitely not as used to these cross country flights as I used to be.” She explained with a laugh. “I used to do them all the time, but not so much anymore.” She paused before actually answering his question. “My wings are tired, and I’m a little wore out, but nowhere near exhausted.” She told Kolin with a grin as she approached the bed where he lay. She sat in an open space on the bed. “I may be able to help with the fatigue if you’d like.” She offered
