Ever Onward (Fey thread, CLOSED)

Post by osprey77 » Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:07 am

Bardon Thespian was worried. For one thing, the last few months had been some of the hardest since he and Kasha la Fey had begun this quest, not simply because they were retracing steps and walking a long ways, but they had suffered their first major setback as well, with Serena, the leader of Xairfaf-Ghilt refusing to lend the aid of her village to the University's cause. The second leg of their quest had not been a total disaster, however, they had picked up more traveling companions, who helped to lighten the mood, and, more important to Bardon, he and Kasha had finally wed.

And this was the root of the other reason Bardon was worried. Recently, in the past month or so, Kasha had been acting strange, and he was worried something was wrong with his wife. Now, they were nearly at the next Fey village, and Kasha was traveling slower than ever, especially in the morning. Due to the fact that most nights were spent open-air camping, he hadn't had much time alone with her to ask what was going on, or how she was feeling.

Elayn, the black otter from Trolon-Rief who accompanied them to mentor Kasha had also noticed the change in her apprentice's behaviour, and her analytical mind was racing, trying to examine the possibilities. Kasha looked a little green around the gills this morning, narrowing it down to likely scenario's in Elayn's mind. One: Kasha was sick with a mild illness, in which case, a word in Aloine's ear might be the best solution (having a healer along was proving useful). Two:Kasha could be... Elayn stopped that thought. No, there weren't many opportunities, and Kasha had been taking a potion she got from Aloine to prevent that. But such potions aren't infallible, are they?

The cause of this worry, Kasha, was in fact, feeling a little nauseated. It had been that way for a few mornings, but she knew it would pass, it always had. That wasn't what occupied her thoughts, she was, like Elayn, more concerned with the 'why'. She had one idea that was becoming more likely everyday, and it scared her. She would keep it to herself for now, but she would have to tell Bardon soon.

At least they were almost at the next village, rumors of 'cursed ground' had informed their course, and the could only hope that whatever the 'curse' was, that Kasha and Elayn, the two more skilled Fey wielders in the group, could handle it. Surely, surely Kasha thought, This can wait until after that.

Mark's eyes were almost always looking around their surroundings, taking in as many detail as he could. He wasn't frantic or anxious, but someone could tell that he was being cautious. Aiden, on the other hand, was focused on the path ahead. The mention of a curse had set him looking forward to a fight.

"You think this curse is dangerous?" Mark asked Aiden. Aiden shrugged. "I hope it's at least interesting." It was obvious that Aiden meant that he hoped it would involve some form of combat. Contrary to his previous attitude at confronting the last fey village, he was back to being a confrontational fighter. Their was something different about him, though. One could tell from a grin that occasionally pulled at the corners of his mouth.

Of all of them, the return journey probably was least arduous to Russel. Sure, it was a long slog retracing ground, but it was familiar ground, with forests he knew. The ginger cat was feeling a lot more than useless, especially after he was able to lead them through forest byways to avoid the border guards between Edwin and Gawain. This had uplifted his mood quite a bit, enough even for him to avoid friction with Aiden.
"Well, from what I can tell, the curse is really just that things grow weird, and folks that look into it don't come back. All kinds of stories why, none alike." The land was gving way from trees to grassy scrub. The fens were further to the south and east, and the sea-fog rarely reached this place. If it had, though, it would have given the land that touch of surreality that gives rise to the macabre. As it was, only some clouds of white and grey hid the sun for stretches of a minute.

Like any child of the forest, though, Russle felt slightly exposed on this landscape. He crowded closer to the main group, by Aloine. He noted the distress on Bardon's worry. He could understand his fears, but he did not share them. Camp babies weren't unusual when he traveled with Robyn. You just dealt with them as they came. Still... "How... certain are you that your potions work?"

Aloine had noticed Kasha's condition as of late, and was worried as well. Her mind quickly going through the symptoms she had observed, and narrowing down the possible causes. She had been lost in this process, simply following the feet in front of her when Russel had stepped up next to her and asked his question. Her tail stiffened and she nearly jumped into Natsuki, on her other side, in surprise. She quickly regained her composure and looked at Russel, a bit of a flush of embarrassment showed through the fur on her face. "well...I've been thinking of that myself..." she started "I've never heard of it not working.." she paused "..but that's not to say that perhaps in Kasha's case it wasn't as effective" She lapsed into thoughtful silence again for a few moments "could be her fey magic neutralized some of the alchemical agents in the potion...I'm really not sure, I've never had a fey taking any of my potions before...maybe we should have given Bardon the male version instead..." she trailed off, and then as if her mind had suddenly shifted gears "oh...I have something I want to show you when we camp tonight" she said to Russel suddenly.

Natsuki had been enjoying the simple act of traveling, being a merchant of sorts, she tended to travel back and forth and all over the known world on a regular basis. She did pick up on Russel and Aloine's conversation though. "if we weren't traveling off the beaten path so much, I'd suggest a wagon or something of the sort" she added before turning her attention back to their surroundings, and thoughts of just what the supposed curse on the area could be.

Kasha felt her nausea pass and she began to pick up the pace again. From what she could tell from the maps they had seen they wouldn't reach the 'cursed area' today, they would set up camp and enter tomorrow. I suppose, The hybrid thought, The idea was that Elayn and I would be feeling refreshed, and generally ready to take whatever it is on magically in the morning. I can only hope i will be.

It seemed that every time they moved to a new village, the challenges increased in difficulty. With her condition thrown into the mix, she only hoped that this village was not hostile. And there is still Vedicus to consider... Kasha subconsciously lay a paw on her stomach. If we fail, what sort of world will my child be born into?

****

The day wore on without too much excitement, and the time soon came to set up camp.

Just before they found an area to set up camp, Aiden's leather boot knocked against something hidden in the overgrowth. Bending down, he began brushing away the grass, dead leaves, and some of the dirt. To Aiden's puzzlement, it was a book. Brushing off the dirt from the cover, he could see that it was a custom bonded book for an abbot. The edges were designed to look like a leafy branch was growing on it/ "Interesting." he muttered. "The Libro de la Vida."

"Hey! What's taking you so long?" Mark called. Looking up, Aiden realized that, since he was in the back of their group, that when he went to uncover the book, they had gone up without him. Taking the book and a long piece of vine he cut, he tied the book to his arm. "Guess I'll have something to read tonight." he muttered, before catching up to the group.

*****

When they began setting up camp, Mark immediately went to work cutting and gathering small branches, dried ones for a fire, and new ones for a few arrows.

"Oh? Alright then." The ginger suspectex that this was yet another ploy to get him to consider the idea of an artificial arm. If so, Aloine's timing was impeccable. Russel could not have been in a more cheerfully accepting mood, and he found himself whistling while they set up camp.
Normally, stealth was of some consideration, but since the night remained clear enough by moonlight, the ginger knew that any sharp-eyed scout could spy them with or without a fire. *And our worst enemy probably don't need eyes, either.*

After the scout had concluded most of the busywork that went with preparing a campsite, he leaned back, relaxing slightly. Sure, they had plenty to be anxious about, but the night was nice enough, and they wouldn't enter the cursed ground until morning. "So..." Russel stretched out yawningly, "What'd you wanna show me?"

Aloine had taken part in setting up camp, helping to geather wood, creating a fire pit, and helping with the cooking. "oh yes." she said as Russle asked what she had wanted to show him. "I'll get it." she went to her pack, and pulled out the patchment case she had been seen with on occasion before. She sat down next to Russle and pulled several large sheets of parchment from the case with a cautious smile as she unrolled the sheets between them. the sheets were covered in extremely detailed schematics for an artificial arm, and the components within. the pages detailed everything from alloy formulas to the sygaldry that helped to power it. All in all, from the drawings, and notes about the completed arm, it seemed as though it would look just like a metal version of a regular arm, though there would be some sygaldry etched into it. "um..well...these are the schematics for a replacement arm." she paused a little gunshy from his earlier refusals of the idea, but still determined that she at least get him to take a serious look at the possiblity. "I would have to find an artificer of course...my abilities in that school are a bit lacking" she said, sounding a little dissapointed in herself "but I figured it might help for you to at least have an idea what it would look like..." she trailed of, giving Russle a tentative smile.

Natsuki had helped with what she could as the group set up camp, and now settled into her martial routines a short distance away from the rest. She used the routines to focus her mind, and release any built up tension...

Bardon, Kasha, and Elayn had all helped with initial set up, and Bardon with the cooking. Now that Elayn was off in the opposite direction of Natsuki, reviewing her own training; Mark, Aiden, Russel, and Aloine were all busy, Kasha and Bardon had time alone to talk.

The two sat somewhat close to the fire, Kasha watching the flames, Bardon watching her, thinking. Kasha had always been quiet, yes. She was the more practical of the two, yes. But she was never a worrier. Despite that, for the past week or so, in addition to the physical changes, she always seemed preoccupied, a little nervous, anxious. It just wasn't like her....

He scooted even closer, laying an arm around her shoulder. "Are you alright?"

She jumped, as if startled out of her own thoughts, then leaned against him. "I'm- fine. Yes, fine..." She trailed off, and the ginger cat/squirrel hybrid could tell she wasn't telling him everything. Just when he was about to push her for the truth, she sighed, leaned over and whispered something to him.

His tail went rigid, poofing out to three times its normal size. A look of shock crossed his face, and his mouth hung silently open. No words would come; he couldn't form a coherent thought.

Aiden and Mark had moved away from the camp in search of a suitable training spot. Once a good distance away, Both began their training. Aiden drew his sword, and practiced a few slash combinations he learned. Mark, armed with a handful of arrows that were little more than sharpened sticks, took aim at a tree about 50 yards away, and began practicing his shooting.

"So, what'd you think is going on with Kasha?" Mark asked, as he fired an arrow. The arrow sank into the tree, just above where he was aiming.

"I don't know. Could be just some persistant sickness she's fighting off." he said, re-sheathing his sword to start another sequence.
"or, she could be pregnant."
Mark's next shot fell just under his intended target. He made a mental not to keep practicing. He could hit a man-sized target, but not in a specific spot.
"Pregnant?" Mark questioned. "How would you know anything about that?"
"I've seen the symptoms a few times during my escort contracts." He brought his sword in a violent upward arch, before bringing it back down in a diagonal slash. "I can't be sure, because i'm no doctor, but I can tell you that it's starting to look like the last escort I did. Albeit, that was a year ago."
"Albeit? Well, looks like the dumb brute knows a few smart words." Mark taunted, firing another arrow. Again, just a few inches low.
"Yeah, sure." Aiden dismissed.
Mark continued. "So, we're those escorts difficult because of that?"
Aiden slashed quickly with an overhead strike, before making a rapid followup to the side. "I just made sure I put a little more effort in protecting the couple."
Mark laughed. "So you do have a heart?"
Aiden couldn't help but grin. "Never said I didn't. It's just buried under alcohol and bruises, and I make sure it stays like that."

Twigs snapped. The rustling of sparse underbrush carried to the camp from whence they came. Then these noises came from another direction as well, and another, until soon the sounds of furs moving haphazardly came from almost every direction save for the purported direction of the Fey village. Whoever they were, they did not seem troubled by their own noise. They were clearly not trying to sneak up on the camp. However, they were obviously moving towards it.

The first to appear was a small canine, a mutt of indeterminate breed, scruffy, emaciated, wearing rags. It peered at them with sunken eyes set into a slack, grim face. It- he- shuffled forward as if attracted to the flame while mumbling <refugee> under his breath in the language of Domus. More furs soon appeared, but they all looked pretty much the same; they were all forlorn feilans wearing rags, staring unblinking at the small camp fire, shuffling towards the light and away from the growing darkness. Nearly every one was a canine, and they all said nothing beyond <refugee…> in Domusian. Some carried large shapeless sacks on their backs or slung from poles between them, and these furs sagged under the weights of their loads.

Russel stared at the schematics, not quite sure what to say. He hadn't considered the idea of a mechanical arm fully since... well, since the last time the cheetah healer had brought it up. He still felt the same revulsion, but fainter; it had been a while since he'd first seen the golems, and...
He sighed. He managed a smile. "Well... thanks for showing me. Still haven't made up my mind, though. I just never seen anything like that. I mean, something good like that." And that was the main problem. If they were fighting a necromancer who used machinery, what prevented their enemy from using his potential arm against him?

The ginger's musings on the subject, however, were broken when his ears caught the sounds of murmuring on the wind. Bounding to his feet, he peered around the camp. Raggedy mutts, bearing loads, were traipsing steadily towards the camp. They had nearly surrounded the place. *How did we not notice them before?*
"Um... do you guys have any idea what's happening?"

Aloine did her best to hide her dissapoinment at Russle's response, though there was a small bright side of the interaction too look at, he hadn't shown the outright distaste for the idea that he had shown before, but that could just be an effort on his part to save her feelings. "well...if you want to see them again...or come to a decision, let me know" she said with a smile that bordered on forced as she rolled the schematics back up. as she was securing the case, she heard, and saw the canines approaching their camp.

the healer in Aloine kicked in full force as she quickly got up, abandoning all thoughts of self preservation, and approached the closest canine. "what happened?" she asked "are there any injured? where did you come from?" her mind was fully focused on doing whatever she could to help. as she reached the small canine that was at the head of the group, she squatted down in front of him (it), putting her hands on his shoulders "I will do what I can to help" she said soothingly as she began channeling flows of magic into the canine, feeling his condition....

--

Natsuki's reaction was nearly the opposite of Aloine, she stepped away from the approaching canines toward the rest of the group. She didn't like the fact that this many furs had practically snuck up on all of them. "dose this seem a little 'off' to anyone else?" she asked the group as she watched the canines approach, not quite sure what to do, but tensed, and ready for a possible fight.

A small part of Bardon's brain was wondering how many more surprises it could handle. No sooner had he learned that in a few scant months he would be a father, than a bunch of weak, ragged canines approached the camp. The poor hybrid was reeling, he wasn't sure how to respond.

Kasha looked at the bedraggled group, then to her mentor. They both knew they were thinking the same thing, and Elayn voiced it aloud, responding to Natsuki's question. "Aye, it's 'off'. Why would Domusian refugees come to Gawain? Wouldn't Edwin have been closer? And anyway, we should have seen signs of a group this large earlier, or at the very least heard them sooner." Raising her voice, the otter addressed their 'visitors'. "Ho there! What is your errand here, and what in Midas's name made you refugees? Do you seek our aid or mean us ill?" She glared around, waiting for an answer.

Mark and Aiden had returned to camp, only to find that a large group of canines had wandered in. Mark brought an arrow against the bowstring, but didn't draw back, keeping it aimed toward the ground. Aiden, however, just looked at the group with a bit of confusion. They we're saying something, but Aiden's Domusian was a bit spotty, if not completely forgotten. "what are they saying?" he asked.

Mark's left ear twitched in confusion, though he was still ready for any violent advances. "Refugee." he announced. Both of them kept their distance at just the edge of the fire's light. In his mind, Mark was running exactly where to shoot his arrows to cause the group to slow down the least in the event of a charge. Aiden, however, was more focused on why a bunch of half-starving canines were wandering around with what didn't look like much direction.
