Stand and Deliver! [Open!]

Post by RatKing » Tue Dec 13, 2011 2:52 am

Winter's grip was setting in well and true; the leaves had long since gone, leaving barren trees clawing at the sky as if in supplication for the sun's heat to return. The snows had been driven across the land, leaving behind great tufts of the stuff, blanketing the world in glittering white, as though everything had been dusted with diamonds.
Kam truly wished it was diamonds; he'd happily tromp through the chilly stuff if such was the case, but that was the kind of dream only the hopeless could truly wish for. Kam, not being the sort to dally in such nonsense, happily dreamed of tubs filled to the brim with rubies he could lounge in. Red was so his colour, unlike that gaudy white that hurt his eyes.

The rat grumbled a bit, tugging the old blanket closer to his plump frame as a small gust of wind sent a dusting of snow into his face, in a fashion not unlike a bully at the beach that knows perfectly well retaliation would ever work. He huddled closer to the pitiful little fire he had managed to get going. He had found a decent spot out of most of the wind, huddled up in the lee of some old fallen tree next to the road. There wasn't much one could say of Kam MacTyr that wouldn't sound like a joke. For instance, he actually thought the old and tattered tri-corner hat made him look dashing, rather than giving him the appearance of some low-end budget extra from a pantomime, which was the case. The soldier's slashed doublet would have been a fine piece of intimidating cloth, if it hadn't originally been tailored for a mouse and left a fair few inches of his gut sagging out the bottom. The less said of his trousers the better, though at the very least they did do the important part of saving others from needing their eyes gouged out with a rusty knife.

He was a miserable rat, huddled up far from the comfort of the sea and the shouts of the bosuns, so often directed his way that they were almost like a mother's song to his somewhat grubby ears. The sun was well on its way to setting on yet another day with no food and no money in his pockets. Being a highwayrat always seemed so very romantic to him, but all those jaunty tales in the pub never went on about the interminable waiting and the numerous broken noses that went with it.

Oh, but what's this? Kam's round, slightly tattered ears perked upwards, dislodging a bit of snow from his hat, which immediately slithered down his neck and under his coat, making him curse and struggle to get it back out. Footfalls in the snow! Someone this way comes! At last! A chance at coin and valuables and food! Possibly another broken nose... No! Think positive, that was the key!
Kam rose to his feet, peeking over the treetrunk, trying to spy the source of the noise, but couldn't see it through the snow and tangled limbs. His mind reeled with the image of a lone, unprotected king striding down the weathered path, pockets bulging with gold, ripe for the plucking! He had to stifle a giggle, reaching under his blanket and grabbing the hilt of his cutlass, dark eyes shining, grinning with the excitement of it.

He had to plan it just right, make a grand entrance, that was the key!

Just there, he heard the crunch of snow, and he burst from around the cover, flinging his blanket aside in a mighty sweep to flash his scarlet-red uniform, drawing his cutlass free in the same instant and standing tall and proud, brandishing the blade under a confident smirk. It was a truly excellent display, one of his best, even Kam had to say. Admittedly, it was somewhat diminished by how the frost had gotten to his sword, meaning he was now brandishing a neatly sheathed cutlass to his mark, but confidence was everything.

'Stand and deliver, for it is thine money or thine life!'

"You know, Infierno doesn't sound that bad right now." Adara, a 24 year old grey wolf in a leather vest, dark green cloth pants, and a green cloak, grumbled. Her apprentice, a 17 year old black wolf in identical clothing save for his cloak being dark blue and his pants being a light grey, gave her shoulder a playful shove. "Oh come on. It's not that bad. If anything. it's kinda fun. Energizing, exciting, and even inspiring." He encouraged.

Both moved through the snow, Adara grudgingly trudging through it. Mark playfully jumping from point to point, keeping himself silent.

Both stopped in their tracks, as a flash of red flew into their vision. Mark's paw flew to his short sword, and Adara drew her own cutlass. Well, halfway. Mark, his short sword not quite drawn, doubled over, trying to hold in his laughter. Adara arched an eyebrow, hesitating, before fully drawing out her blade.

"You know, it'd be difficult to really kill anything with a sheathed blade. If you want, I'll give you a minute to fix that little problem."

Mark, unable to contain his laughter, fell into the snow, almost unable to breathe from the hysterical sight.

"Pup! Up and Ready!" Adara quickly snapped. Mark, regaining the ability to breathe, stood back up. "Slow week?" He asked the rat, still snickering.

Maya, Slippy, and Chill worked their way through the snow. Chill, a Polar Bear, just plowed his way through it. Slippy slid over the top, herself being an Emperor Penguin. Maya walked right behind Chill, huddling her small Arctic Fox body behind the giant Bear.

They were moving cross country, not even that tired. Back in the Arctic Islands, this was a walk in the aprk compared to their snowbanks. So, when they saw a few figures in the distance moving about, they moved towards them as swiftly as possible.

"What do you think they are doing, Trundler?" Slippy asked. Trundler was her name for Chill.

"Probably just chatting," Chill replied.

"No, they seem to be in an argument. One of them is holding a sword aloft," inserted Maya. Being small, she had keen eyesight, and was able to see them fairly well. "We should probably go slowly into this."

Chill nodded. "We bow to your wisdom, Gifted One."

Maya swatted at him. "I told you not to call me that. Let's get going."

They moved towards them, Chill in the front, with Slippy slightly behind and to the left, with Maya in the back.

To his credit, the rat's proud stance only faltered for a second, but he rallied magnificently. 'Consider it an act of charity and kindness on behalf of a gentleman, madam! I am merely after your purse, and it would be a terribly rude thing to draw blood for such a small recompense, no?' He waggles the cutlass vaguely, setting one hand on his plump side in the manner of a fencing artist who's had a dozen or two too many eel pies in his past. His eyes flick to the drawn sword in Adara's hand, but afloat on pure self-assured ego he carries on, adding a bright grin to the display, though his eyes twitches a little at Mark's little jibe about the hard week. The kid had no idea what it is like to eat boiled boot, he was certain of it.

'Do you truly think I'd be so daft to challenge if I wasn't prepared? I can disarm you with a sheathed blade if I so try! But there is no need for you to suffer bruised paws this day; no, all I ask is a toll!' He waggles the cutlass again, the rings on the sheath jingling softly, the strap that was holding it to his belt wobbling. 'A pawful of silver and merrily you shall pass!'

Others might have been a bit better at thinking than Kam, but he had the air of one who was always expecting a pile og gold to be around every corner, and even after a hundred corners that have not born golden fruit, he was still expecting it to be around the next one; not for him skulking away to nurse his bruised pride, oh no!

It wasn't like he actually had that much of it left to start with.

Another sheathed waggled. 'A few silver is better, yes?' he repeats, sounding only a tiny bit worried now, given that he just spotted the movement out of the corner of his eye...

Ivelese's black boots crunched as she walked down the snow, covered path, her large pale blue jacket shielding her from the cold, while the 22 year old white wolf jumped playfully through the snow as a young child would. She stopped a distance away when she saw the others, the most noticeable thing against the glittering white landscape, she moved closer, her large coat making her wealth quite obvious.

Adara grinned at the rat's confidence. Pathetic as he was, he maintained a flair for theatrics, and, however misguiding, a very big ego.

"If that is the gentleman's wish." her voice almost teasingly informed, giving a subtle sway of her hips. Then her voice became commanding, and her posture almost militaristic. "Weapons at the ready!" she barked. Mark's demeanor changed. Drawing his short sword in one paw, a dagger in the other, he gave a mischievous grin. "You picked the wrong people to ambush today."

Adara's next command sent them both in a dash. "Till our last breath!"

Closing the distance in a burst of speed, Adara brought her cutlass in a beautiful arc upward against the rat's own sword. Mark kept a good distance, as he began circling around, waiting for his part, if need be.

Kam knew this was a bad idea. He should have listened to his bones this morning and just stayed in bed... Or at least, not crawled out of the snowbank that his bed and home and, at one distressing point in the night, very nearly his toilet when he heard someone shuffling through the sorry excuse for his camp, though happily they hadn't bothered to check the little hole in the boughs he had crawled into.

The swift cut catches the rat's sword, cutting into the old worn leather of the scabbard and hooking the strap, yanking it free from the bandit's grasp and sending it sailing off a good dozen paces away, to land with a sad little crunch in the snow. The rat yelps and scrambles backwards, falling onto his rear with all of the air out of his balloon, the fellow looking remarkably like a very miserable, weather-beaten and morose rat. 'Ah! Ahh... Umm... I don't suppose... you'd consider mercy?' he wheedles, no longer using the bluff and confident voice he had been trying on. His cloth-wrapped feet draw up a bit, the rat holding a paw before his chest, trying to look utterly harmless and not even having to act.

It was just a joke, hey? A jolly bit of fun, right? He tries on a sickly smile, eyes darting every which way trying to find a means of escape. 'A merry story to tell your kids, whatsay?'

-----

To the others watching the tableau, it seems things have come to a short conclusion; the fellow holding the sword was neatly disarmed and is now himself being held at sword point while lying on his backside in the snow. He seems to be gibbering for mercy.

More interesting to Chill and his friends at that point however, is the polite little cough just off to the side, near a small but dense copse of hazel. Four tall, lanky figures push themselves upwards from the snow, their pointed faces wrapped in white cloth flecked with black. Much of their shoulders and bodies are much the same, all wrapped in cunning camouflage that makes them disappear next to the snow-covered hazel. Two of them are weasels, or possible stoats, or even ferrets; it is hard to tell under the figure-hiding cloth, but notable are the well-kept flatbows in their paws, each setting an iron-tipped quarrel into the nock and hefting it in the direction of the small party, only some twenty paces distant. The third member is taller than the other two but of the same shape, suggesting a Sable, and she is setting an arrow to a great curving longbow and eyeing Chill in a meaningful way as she aims the steel tip in the polar bear's direction. The fourth is a squat and stocky Skunk, offering a bright grin as he leans on a spear with a wicked curving tip.

'Ah've no idea where you three ha'come from, butteh looks tha' you've stumbled intae a bit of hard luck. No, don't you move big boy,' says the Skunk, pointing a claw at the huge Chill. 'You shift half a step and yon two little friends gettit in th'neck. Lagg n' Lugg 'ere be dumber than a sac 'o wet mice, but damned if they couldn't pin yon little fox to yore hide.' The skunk draws the cloth away from his face a bit, showing his rather handsome mustelid features, fur black as soot and glossy. He smiles bright, and it is a genuine one, 'Just stand ye still were ye are; we can't have ye frightening the canary like that daft rat out there. No harm to ye so long as ye stay keep yore feet where they is and your voices stay low.'

The four stay close to the hazelwood, only the Skunk leaning out slightly to peer towards the road. He gives the two wolves a cursory look, but seems much more interested in the figure in blue and the other in white trudging closer, a little ways behind them. 'Just a bit more, aye...'

-----

Ivelese sees the red-clothed figure go down with a squawk, the tables turned entirely by the two wolves, both with swords drawn. The fellow in the snow looks to be pleading for his life like a right and proper coward. They seem to have the matter well in hand...

((Just out of curiosity is the figure in white one of someone else's characters, or did you accidentally get a figure in white out of my post?))

Ivelese stopped a ways away from the others, her sensitive ears picking up a voice, one kind of heavy on patois at that. She watched as the red clothed figure ahead of her fell, feeling the need to help him, she directed some of her magic on Adara's cutlass, the sword started to get very hot, eventually Adara would have to let go of it to avoid severe burns "That should be good enough." she figured

Chill looked and then glanced at Maya. "I never saw them," she said. Chill nodded slightly, and then all of a sudden a casing of ice formed around him. It covered his whole body, and then he held out his hand. A greatsword of ice formed and he charged at the three.

Meanwhile, Maya summoned a blast of wind to knock off the arrows sure to be going at them. She then sommoned a lighting bolt at the one with the spear.

Slippy, knowing this was happening, slid on her belly, gathering melted snow, and formed a shield of water in front of her. She then formed a few water needles and shot them toward their enemies.

((( *rubs his face* Kael, your folks were being held at arrow-point, but politely... I was hoping you'd chat it out, seeing as the four weren't being total d-bags, but if you continue with that method I either have to Godmode out your magic thus ruining the game, or you kill the four thus wiping out the plothook that would have everyone basically inducted into a Robin Hood-type scenario, and so bringing the game to a grinding halt before it even got off the ground...

Raven; sorry, I had misread your post; I had indeed thought there were two wolves, not one, heh. )))

[it is just a natural reaction they have... they are from a tribe in the Arctic Islands... They don't much like being held at arrow-point, or threatened. But, I guess i could change it... ignore my earlier post.]

Chill held his hands up and looked at Maya. "Sorry, M, gotta comply. They have the advantage of range."

Maya nodded. "Very wise, Chill. No need to antagonize what we can avoid. Looks the barbarian inside is getting a cursory look."

Slippy just whined, "But, we can take them! We have defeated greater numbers than these four! C'mon, whaddaya say?"

Maya shook her head. "And Slip is just a lost cause. Well, Slip, if you want to become a pincushion, go ahead. I for one feel the spirits don't want me dead."

Slippy hesitated. "Ok, maybe not.... pansies..."

Chill just laughed. "You will learn, eventually. For now, let Maya do the talking."

Maya called out to the four. "What do you want with us, spear-wielder?"

Adara, noticing her blade heating up, tossed the blade up a bit, before grabbing it again, a small barrier of her own magic surrounding the hilt. Nodding to the caster, Mark got the message, and began advancing towards the white wolf.

"Shouldn't be much of a problem." Mark muttered under his breath.

Adara, looking at the rat before her, began to feel a sort of sympathy for the rat.

I knew taking on an apprentice would make me soft. she thought, before re-sheathing her cutlass. kneeling down near the rat, she offered her paw to help him up. "I still remember my highway robbing days. Just a note, You'd have been a bit more menacing with a drawn blade." she sighed. "Nice come-back, though. It'd have worked on the lesser-willed."

Ivelese, seeing mark advancing, tried her best to get a safe distance between him and her, moving back a few a steps through the snow, she began trying to think of a way to stop mark from reaching her, almost slipping in the snow, Ivelese got an Idea, using her magic, she turned the snow under Mark's boots into a slick sheet of ice, causing Mike to slip on it and fall into the deep snow on the side of the path.

Once he was down, Ivelese slowly approached Mark, so that she could see if he was ok "I'm sorry about that, you ok?" Ivelese asked, offering Mark a paw so that she could help him up.

[OOC: Hope you don't mind me joining. Aldana's ref: http://feila.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6096]

Aldana trudged up to the two, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. He had Kam's cutlass in paw. He returned it to him and turned to Adara. "What did you think you were doing to thy poor rat? Lookat 'im! Just a pore ol' lad who would benefit from a little bit of money! I'm glad you thought again before harming 'im. Otherwise I'd 'ave to teach you a lesson, lady!" The rat tried to scowl, as he knew that he stood no chance against the much larger creature so he attempted to look tough. Suddenly he sat down hard and rubbed his arms. He was shivering severely and his teeth were chattering loudly, as he was clad in nothing but a T-shirt and a sleeveless vest.
