Off-duty officers, and various happenings (Open)

Post by Rackenhammer » Wed Oct 31, 2012 6:54 pm

There are few professional, official soldiers in Gawain, and a great many fighters. It may be said that it is a nation of mercenaries, though its enemies would call it a nation of bandits. Those inclined to praise it might say it was a nation of warriors.

In any case, the military might of the nation, while by no means small, was usually scattered in bands of knights, mercenaries, highwaymen, and militias, which tended only to band together in times of great crisis. The royal battalions were by comparison a small force, and a uniformed soldier an uncommon sight.

A captain of the royal army, therefore, was a striking sight, even in a relatively large town, and would often draw interested onlookers. Such was the fact that Ivan Pachtril was counting on as he walked into a tavern that evening. Perhaps a pretty wench would be responsive to a handsome soldier with a handsome tip? Some interested maiden from the shops of fields come in to take a look? Ah, the possibilities!

Natsuki had just sat down on a stool in a small cleared area in the tavern and was abut to draw her bow across the strings of her violin when a uniformed soldier stepped in, and not just a soldier, an officer. She watched him for a moment, then looked around the tavern, her first thoughts were to wonder if something serious was about to happen. She had been in Gawain on several occasions before, and the only time she had ever seen uniformed officers had been under less than ideal circumstances for all involved. She kept a close eye on Ivan as she finally began to play. She played a relaxing song with an easy tempo to set the atmosphere for the early evening. As the evening wore on and more customers arrived, she would start playing more rousing and energetic music. For the moment though, her primary thought path was wondering just exactly what an officer was doing in this tavern.

After she finished her first song, Natsuki started another. What she played on the violin was simple enough that she didn't have to use her chin to brace the instrument, allowing her to sing along. Her voice was smooth as silk, and sultry. It was easy to tell that she was a well practiced singer and seemed to take pride in her singing voice.

The sun was just beginning to set as Thomas trudged into town. The sunset shone through the trees lining the road, doubtlessly creating a beautiful scene that would remain in one’s memory forever, if Thomas would just turn his head to look. He didn’t, unable to muster the energy required to do anything but put one paw in front of the other. In one paw, he gripped his bag, from which the reassuring sound of his tools clinking together periodically emerged. With his other paw, he reached up and adjusted the brim of his hat to block the sunlight shining into his eyes. The paw came away with a faint dusting of ash. He sighed, forcing a smile as he entered the town, nodding to a nearby group of citizens. He received no nods in return, and quickly looked back down at the road.

He was able to blend with the thinning crowd as they headed home for the day. He focused on putting on paw in front of the other, just as he’d done at throughout that day and the previous night. He prodded his tired brain until it threw together a plan. First and foremost, shelter. He glanced up, took a good look around, and confirmed what he had begun to suspect on the trip here: he had no idea where he was.

He was on the point of finding a nice doorway or something to curl up under, when the smell of food and the sound of singing drew him to an inn nearby. He slipped in, moving quickly to a table near the edge of the room. The fox’s singing filled the air, and this time Thomas didn’t need to force himself to smile. In the warmth of the common room, with music in the air and the smell of food hanging around, he allowed himself to relax. The sun was going down, taking with it the previous horrid day, and promising a fresh start in the morning. He had rebuilt before, and he could do so again. Then the glitter of light off of armor caught his eye, his good mood vanished, and he sank lower in his chair. There was a soldier in the inn. An actual, uniformed soldier. Not good. Not good at all. He pushed his chair back into the slight safety offered by the shadows at the edge of the room, and looked for a good opportunity to slip upstairs without drawing attention.

Well, it seemed like someone had come in from very far afield! Foxes, though by no means predominant in Gawain, weren't too uncommon of a sight. Still, there hung about every non-mustelid a flavor of the exotic, and this vixen was no exception.
*And a musician to boot as well! This evening seems to be quite promising.*

A soldier's uniform could be a mixed blessing on social occasions. A handsome male in uniform is a dashing sight, but when soldiers are not a common sight, the common folk get suspicious and fearful when one starts hanging about the place. Ivan eased himself into the situation, ordering beer for himself, and for a few furs which had dared to sit near him. His talk was not the most sparkling of wit, but he could be friendly and open when he wanted to be, and soon the patrons coming in were no longer unnerved by the good-humored captain.
The polecat's attention, however, remained upon the vixen, his boot tapping in time with the music. When she sang, he leaned forward in silence to drink it in. When she had finished, he passed a coin to the bartender. "See the lady has a drink, whatever she likes, to sooth her parched throat. Tell her I am quite enchanted with her melodic voice, and do not wish to see it wither for lack of drink."

Then came in another incongruity. Kangaroo rats were rather an uncommon sight, though a trickle of immigrants from Maze was almost perennial these days, what with the poverty and unrest in that country. He seemed shy, another exception to the lot of sociable mustelids gathering in the bar parlor. With no motivation other than sociability, Ivan hailed the rodent, raising his mug in the air.

Natsuki relaxed a bit as the soldier ordered a drink, and the tension in the locals furs began to bleed away. As she finished the song she had been singing, but before she could begin the next, the bartender approached with Ivan's message. She smiled and ordered an Avondale, which was a code she had set up with the bartender before she had started performing. The drink, if the the tavern actually had any was an expensive wine, but what she got was mostly water. This way, she wasn't offending anybody offering her drinks, she wasn't getting too drunk to play, and the pair would split the proceeds at the end of the night...everybody won. The bartender returned after a couple of moments with her drink in a mug. She flashed a warm grin at Ivan as she raised the mug in thanks, and took a large swig from it. She stood up, and set the mug on the stool she had occupied before she took up her violin again. She started tapping her foot lightly in a quick tempo before she started into a quick, lively drinking song that before long had everybody tapping toes, and even a few patrons on their feet. She watched as the soldier hailed a kangaroo rat that had slipped in, and wondered what might be going on. She began moving through the room, light and graceful on her feet as she performed a few dance steps, and a twirl or two, continuing the lively song as she made her way closer...curious as to what might be going on.

Neo went downstairs into the common room.

He had arrived the city at noon and had travelled all night. When he approached the inn, he just rent a room, threw his stuff onto the floor of his chamber and took a nap.

He didn't sleep well, so that the noises coming from the below him had aroused him. The sun was nearly set now.
Being still a bit tired and exhausted from his trip, he dressed in his civilian clothes, poured some cold water on his face and afterwards left his room, heading for the common room.

Arriving it he could recognize a female singing some drinking song and some furs standing and clapping in rhythm. All in all the atmosphere was very relaxed.

Then suddenly Neo identified an Officer sitting at the bar. It was Ivan Pachtril, he could say that though he just saw his back.
*I hadn't thought that he would arrive that early.

He tried to make his way to the bar, which was not that easy. The crowd got more and more enthusiastic, while the singer and violin player, a young vixen, played her music faster and more powerful.

As he reached the bar he took place next to Ivan, who first didn't remarked him.
"Didn't expect you that soon", Neo said in a lowered but fairly loud voice.

Thomas sat in his chair, looking down at the cheap drink he’d ordered and, once again, trying to throw together a plan. He looked up at the soldier across the bar for the second time in as many minutes. So far, the fur seemed content to drink and chat with those around him. Did he know? Was he even there for Thomas? How fast had news traveled? How much did he know?!

These thoughts and others like them swirled through the rat’s head as he slumped lower in his seat, resting his head on the table. More ash fluttered down from his hat, and he let out a loud sneeze, sitting up in time to meet the Captain’s gaze as the fur hailed him from across the room. *He knows he sees you he knows run run run run!* A tiny voice shrieked in the back of his head. Thomas stamped it out, and, acting on habit, raised his glass in acknowledgement, forcibly affixing a grin to his face. He downed the entire drink in one gulp, pretending to watch the singer as she danced across the room. A familiar heat spread through him, and helped clear his thoughts a bit. Maybe the soldier wasn’t here for him. He certainly had made no move to arrest the rat, or even hide his presence. It didn’t look like he even had any troops with him.

Of course, it was at that moment that another fur came down and addressed the captain. The tiny voice returned, shouting, clawing at the back of his mind, telling him to move, to run, that another night on the road was preferable to years in a dungeon. He twitched, reaching down for his bag and brushing off his coat as he readied to leave…*To where? Another night on the road? Another small town, another incident?* The idea occurred to him just as he was rising from his seat. He settled back down, suddenly unable to face the thought of fleeing. His thoughts swirled, the hours on the road finally catching up to him. He glanced up, focusing on the glitter of the captain’s armor in the light. The fur still hadn’t moved. No soldiers had appeared, no reinforcements. Perhaps they weren’t after him at all. *And why would they be? What have I done wrong? I only tried to help. They invited me in in the first place!*

He pushed back his chair, glancing about as the room swayed around him. Everything could be sorted out in the morning. He just…needed some time to collect himself. What little money he had been able to save should get him a room for the night. He crossed the tavern, brushing past the musician and the captain’s table to seek out the innkeeper. After a brief conversation and some haggling, he managed to secure a place to sleep for the night. He turned, and looked down with a frown at a few scattered flakes of ash on the floor. Probably from his overcoat. He ascended the stairs quickly, wishing he’d thought to brush off his clothes before entering the building.

The Kangaroo rat, having met Ivan's "wassail" with a "drinkhail," removed himself from any vestige of suspicion in the Captain's mind. Why wouldn't the fellow come out for a good time, with such a pretty girl to dance and sing, and good beer and fellowship? Provided, of course, that the bounder didn't cut in on the vixen.

Speaking of-
Natsuki had started on a traditional drinking song, one which could get some patrons dancing, and all of them singing. It was a point of national pride that Gawainians could all sing in chorus, and well at that. Ivan, throwing his cloak over the back of his stool, began to dance himself, to the cheers and song of his table.
What luck! The vixen was dancing his way. This would be easy, a simple matter of dancing up, and then dancing along with her. It would make for a better show, which would pay better, which would make the singer well-disposed to him. Ah, and then-

"Didn't expect you that soon."

Captain Pachtril didn't expect that at all. It completely threw off his step, causing him to stumble to a stop. The polecat turned an irritated face to the avian. "Ach, who do you think you are?"

Natsuki watched the kangaroo rat get up and sway, seemed the poor fellow didn't hold his drink very well. As he pushed past her, heading for the innkeeper, she caught a whiff of smoke and ash, and had to wonder what his story was as she noticed that he was actually leaving a faint trail of ash in his wake. Much as she was curious, now was not the time to pursue curiosity so she let her attention settle back on her music as she continued to move through the room winding slowly closer to the captain's table. She noticed that the polecat had gotten to his feet, and he did cut quite the figure. No sooner than the captain had started to dance, he was approached by an avian and stopped. She continued in that direction if for no other reason than to see what about that avian had turned the captain's mood so quickly.

"Come on, you know exactly who I am", Neo replied with a small smile, seeing him stumbling. He didn't want to overtake the Captain at all.
"Can't you recognize an old friend of yours, even if it has been some years since we met last. Remember the basic military training we had together?"

Neo was delighted to see his old friend again.
"Do you have enough to drink? I'll buy a round and then you tell me what you've done since we finished military academy!"

Remarking Ivan's unsteady looks to the dancing vixen, he just said "The vixen.. you like her, huh?"

Thren walked into town, the hood of his cloak pulled over his features. The cloak served as protection from weather while simultaneously keeping his bastard sword hidden from view. He didn't like people recognizing him and/or his sword. For the sword had a symbol, recognizable while still faded, of his old house, the house of Flen. He didn't like being associated with his former family's militaristic... fanaticism to some, devotion to others. Irregardless, he disliked being associated with a family that cast him out of the House for not going into the military.

He walked down the street until the Weasel found the inn. He kept his hood up as he walked in, the dark green cloak hiding all but his hands and boots, and his hands had suede gloves on. "One room, please, good sir," he said to the barkeeper, not seeming to notice the tavern noise. In truth, he was listening intently to his surroundings, making sure no-one was sneaking up on him.

Ivan had to blink a few times before he recognized the avian in front of him. It wasn't the booze, in fact the polecat had quite a good head for drink. Or, as one of his more sardonic cousins would put it, Ivan had so little of a mind sober it didn't make much of a difference when he was drunk. That would have been a little unfair... but just a little.
"Oh, of course, Neo; it's been a while, hasn't it?" The captain lowered his voice as he spoke to his fellow-officer. "Look old boy, any other time I'd be glad to catch up, but right now I've got an opportunity here..." *Or had at any rate. It'll take a while to get back into dancing again- Oh, she's coming this way.*

"I do rather fancy her, actually. Pray excuse me a moment." As Natsuki approached, the polecat stepped up to her and bowed, making the initial moves of a Mirror Dance. It was a dance peculiar to Gawain, and was pretty much as the name implied, a dance where one partner tried their best to match the actions of the other. It was chiefly remarkable in two respects; that it was practiced both elegantly in the castles, and roughly in the backcountry. All classes danced it, and knew how to dance it. Secondly, the female partner could lead as much as the Male. Ivan allowed Natsuki to take the first lead.

One might forgive the captain, at this stage, for failing to notice the arrival of a cloaked figure...

(Sorry about the delay)

It took a couple of tries to get the key in the lock; the hallway was unlit, and Thomas’s paws were unsteady. The room was darker than the hall, and it took him a few minutes to get some candles lit. Leaving his bag on the bed, he removed his overcoat and hat, taking them over to the room’s small window and giving them both a good shake. He stood there for a moment, watching the ash float away into the darkened alleyway below, before turning away and tossing his coat on the bed. Despite his every muscle crying out for sleep, Thomas crossed over to his medical bag and began sorting through. He pawed through the tools he had been able to salvage, and what notebooks had been close at hand when it came time to run.

Everything was disorganized and mixed together, having been hurriedly tossed in by Thomas as everything collapsed around him. Unconsciously, his eyes drifted down to a small scar on his palm, the result of tossing a scalpel into the bag without the proper amount of care. He supposed that was what happened when one doesn’t respect one’s tools. He muttered an apology to the implement as he removed it and set it aside for cleaning, his blood still staining the blade.

He turned away from the tools, resolving to sort them the next day, and focused on a few leather-bound notebooks he’d taken with them. Removing them with the utmost care, he gently spread them out on the small bedside table. The last one was of particular interest to him, the cover scarred by fire, but the inside still easily legible; the notes he’d taken in the days leading up to the trouble. He’d assumed it had been lost to the blaze, along with…well, a great many other things, now that he thought about it. Elation flowed through him, and he grinned, giggling under his breath before breaking out into gales of desperately relieved laughter. His work had not been lost! The volunteers had not been expended in vain. In a fit of joy, he planted a kiss on the cover. It tasted of blood and burnt leather, but he paid it no mind. Thomas spun, plunging a hand into the bag, ignoring the fresh nicks and scratches he acquired as he removed a worn pencil from the bag. His notes still needed work. Findings had to be organized, analyzed, and compiled.

He threw open the door to his room, heading back down to the main room with a quick step. The light in his room was terrible for working, and all thoughts of sleep had been banished from his mind. As he crossed the room, heading back towards his old table, he cast smiles at all about him. He exchanged polite greetings with furs as he passed their tables, shaking hands beaming all the while. He noticed the captain from earlier dancing with the vixen, and called out a few words of encouragement, not noticing or caring that he had slipped into his native Maze. Even the arrival of the rather menacing cloaking figure did not put him off his new-found enthusiasm. The stranger received a wide smile and a greeting like everyone else. Settling himself in, he set to making notations on the pages of his journal, stopping only to order another drink from the innkeeper, which sat at the edge of his table, forgotten.

Natsuki grinned as the captain approached. She answered his bow with the best curtsy she could manage while still playing her violin. It took her a couple moments to realize the dance the captain had started, while she was familiar with Gawainian dances, it had been a while since she was last in the country. Her eyes lit up as she realized what dance he was doing, and that he was leaving the lead open to her. She was light on her feet as she took a couple steps to the left, feet crossing one behind the other as she did, then did the same to the right. At the end, she spun once and put her left foot back, tapping her toes to the floor twice. It wasn't anything terribly complicated, but she did it all while still playing the song. The kangaroo rat that had just headed for a room, came back to the common room suddenly full of enthusiasm and energy where before he had looked like he was about to fall on his face. She wondered to herself just what was up with that rodent. The thought was quick, and she turned her attention back to the officer, waiting to see just what he would do next.

Ivan was, at this point, beyond caring what language the encouragements were called out to him in. Why should he? Off-duty, and dancing with a pretty lady, no officer could be honorably be expected to pay attention to anything else. Indeed, to suggest such a thing might have been an insult worthy of a duel!

The Captain was a good deal heavier than the vixen, built solidly along the "recruiting poster" model, but he could dance. Social accomplishments of the kind were more or less required if one wanted to advance beyond ensign. He could follow the steps easily enough, through to the spin and the taps with the left; here she ceded the lead to him.
The polecat began with a crossing-step retracting his steps, followed by a few clog steps along the military lines, before suddenly leaping on top of an empty table. The table was of sturdy oak, well able to hold his weight. He bent down, throwing out a quick series of kick steps before ceding the lead back again. On his face was pure admiration for the way the vixen could dance and play, weaving the rhythm of the steps with the melody of the fiddle.
