The Lost Technocrat (Domus, Open)

Post by Rackenhammer »

The background of the world had long since dissolved into a chaotic background, against which the fallen angels danced and howled their hymns of hell.
*Oh, great. Auditory hallucinations.*
With sight and sound mentally made moot, Kolin von Drake could only navigate the subterranean hallways by touch and smell, and the dust from these forgotten corridors was strangling the last.
"Just keep to the wall, find a door. Keep to the wall, find a door." Kolin had been repeating this mantra so often the words seemed to dissolve into meaningless syllables, but the advice held true. It was the one sure way out of a maze, and there had to be a way out, or else he could not have gotten in.
Well, brought in. And not by his consent, either. He had little energy to spare for cursing himself for being off his guard, and he'd gone through most of his choice self-insults on the way down. He blamed class sympathies; it was hard for him to shake the elementary superstition that the rich parts of town were the safest for him. In reality, his particular enemies were, if anything, more likely to be among the upper-class.
On top of this predicament, he was no longer in his native land, having come from Gawain on business, escorting a delivery of some antiquities (for which he received a handsome commission). He was now stripped of all communication devices, his jacket, credit cards, and shoes.
*Aha! A door. I hope this one leads outside.* The last few had been utility closets, and Kolin could not quite shake the fear that they had all been the same utility closet. But no, this one led to stairs, and the stairs led upwards. As he dragged himself up, he reflected that things could be significantly worse. He could still be in the power of those thugs who had nabbed him sometime after the drop-off. Fortunately, they had chosen the wrong sedative, fast penta. For most people, it was a drug that induced a cheerful lethargy. But a few react to it oddly, and Kolin was one of those few. It made him hyper, angry, and a beast in a brawl. Unfortunately, it also acted as a hallucinogen, hence his present predicament. Still, he did not anticipate pursuit for a little while.

After about a half-hour's climbing, he reached another door, this one leading outside. The city air, as always, was tinged with pollutants, but it was literally a breath of fresh air after the stale and musty corridors of- what was this place again?
The hallucination had faded a bit; the demonic singing had faded into the background of thought, and the material world had reasserted itself before Kolin's eyes. He did not yet feel inclined to trust it's shape. Still, if his sight told him anything, he was in a poorer district than the one in which he had been nabbed, and he had emerged into an alleyway.
He stumbled into the street and collapsed against the wall, licking his dry lips. His "reaction" had dehydrated him, and he had not drunk anything for some time, anyhow.
Any passers-by would have not thought him out of place, outlandish figure as Kolin was, being part fox (giving him his fur pattern), part cat (his body and head shape), and part avian (from which he got a set of functioning wings). His shoeless feet had long since had their socks worn to ribbons, his remaining t-shirt and khaki slacks were both ripped and grimy. He had a few open cuts, which stained the white areas of his fur and clothes the rusty red-brown of blood. His eyes were bloodshot, and had a hard time focusing. In short, he looked like nothing so much as an addict in his last stage of social decay.
"Help." Whether the strangeness Kolin heard in his own voice was due to drug-clouded ears or to simple dryness, he didn't know. Neither did he know if anyone heard, or if anyone would ever come.

Rosa Delarosa looked around the area, a little buzzed from the rave she just helped organize. It had been a big deal ending in a brand-new mix the DJ called "Solstice of the Summer song". It was fast and hardcore. Almost everyone that had danced to it was out cold in the old station that had been renovated just for the rave.

Rosa was rather tired herself, but still had to keep her wits about her. She had a 2 mile stretch before she got to the hotel. It was about half-way across that distance that she spotted Kolin, not by sight, but by scent. She remembered his scent from their last few meetings, one of which was a gathering of those strong enough in the ways of magic to use the "dead" art.

She had fostered a few romantic notions about the hybrid, but saw that he was more interested in another, so she left that alone for the time. Kolin looked worse than she felt after almost 5 hours of hard partying. She was not stupid though. Kolin wasn't supposed to be here, of all places, tore-up in some alleyway. "Don't worry Kolin," she said as she bewitched him into a deep slumber, "I'll get you home safely." she carefully lifted him onto her shoulders, then took him to her room.

Morning rolled around and Rosa covered her head with a pillow. She grumbled about the 'after-party' not being a party at all, then disrobed and slipped into the shower...

Just in the nearby alley, passerby's wondered about a strange echoing noise coming beyond the fence. It sounded like the sound of banging and crashing trash bins. A lone feline, a short-haired cat, was off in his own little world, headphones pressed into his ears. He danced and skidded along the dirt and grass as he pounded on the tin and plastic, creating an echoing beat as he sang full power to the lyrics of the song that played on his portable player. He threw his weight around as trance took over, remembering the rave from the previous night - off in the recently renovated station.

Since his volume was on full power, he didn't realize that a resident was poking his equine head out the window.

"Imbécile! Sortir avant J'appelle la police!" He raised an arm and fumbled around, obviously annoyed at his unexpected alarm clock. When he realized the cat did not hear him, he found what he was looking for - an alarm clock - and tossed it down, smacking the feline across the muzzle.

"Merde!" the cat sprawled to the ground and rubbed his face with his two paws. His nose throbbed and he looked up. "Oh." he said, scrambling up and running out the alley.

The horse snorted and shut the window. That was one alley hoodlum out of the way.

"A-ah!" Kolin couldn't manage more than a weak cry upon seeing Rosa emerge from the alleyway. As bad as he looked, it was nothing compared to how his still addled mind saw Rosa. The sight resembled nothing so much as a giant cockroach. The voice was somewhat less garbled; he couldn't trace it exactly, but he could tell it was a friend. "Bitte, wasser...*" Sleep cut off his plea for water.

Enchanted sleep is without dreams, a point in it's favor. Kolin probably would have been mentally trapped in the middle of a Kahunian desert during the night if this were not so. As it was, he awoke so early in the morning that night wasn't done yet, still foggy from just waking up, along with some residual delirium from last night. In a sort of desperate stumble crawl, he found the kitchen faucet and sucked the water straight from it, soaking the front of his shirt. Kolin drank for about 20 minutes straight before he felt hydrated enough to stop, at which point he just slid to the floor, asleep again... but not for long.

Kolin had heard the feline's music before he woke up; the sound had integrated itself pretty well in his dreams, which were of the time his native city was in near-chaos. The altercation in Domish, however, proved incongruous enough to rouse him from slumber. For the second time in 24 hours, he found himself in a strange place. He still couldn't see clearly (though by this point coffee could fix that), and had a hard time thinking straight, but he could hear the sound of a shower in the distance, and he was 90% certain he was still in Domus.
With effort, the hybrid pulled himself to a window and looked out. He could see the young object of the dispute, and could hear the music out of his headphones, though faintly, as they had been jostled somewhat from the feline's ears in his haste.
"Cat, wo zum Tuefel bin ich**?" At this point, Kolin could only muster the strength to speak in his own tongue.

*Please, water...

Stopping to catch his breath, the bluish-white feline leaned against a tall wooden fence. He threw a small yellow-blue backpack off his shoulders and to the ground, stuffing his drumsticks - two fluorescent light sticks which he wielded at the rave and earlier against the tins - and withdrawing a plastic bottle of water. He chugged down some and promptly threw it back in, zipping it and sleighing it to his back before walking out of the alley, closer to the road. He dusted some dirt off his nondescript clothing, then slapped his paws together. The cat was licking into his paws and rubbed them against his sore muzzle when he heard - through the dislodged headphones - someone calling out to him. Was someone going to throw another home appliance at him?

The slightly grizled feline, looking to be in his late 20's, looked behind to the window - seeing the hybrid of...whatever he was. He had no clue what he was saying. Was he drunk? Oh, wait - that sounded like Gawainian.

"Je ne peux pas parler en Gawain!" he said to the hybrid, hoping he understood. "Eh...hrm..." he tilted his head, but decided to try Edwinish, with whatever - terrible accent and pronounciation - as he could. "I don't speak Gawain!"

Rosa finished her shower and dried herself off, then stepped out with with her towel wrapped around her for modesty. "Glad to see you're awake Kolin. I'll set some coffee to brew, I'll need it if I'm going to stay awake after that nice shower. You should probably take one yourself." she said, grabbing a clean pair of panties and a bra while walking toward the kitchen.

She made a morning espresso blend, powerful on all accounts. She put on her underwear after she set the coffee to brew, making sure her back was to Kolin. She got some cinnamon roles out of the refrigerator, and made a fresh "country" steak-and-eggs omelet once that was out, and toasted some bread. Rosa looked over toward Kolin and blushed a little, surprising herself by doing so.

The omelet was finished, as was the toast. "Kolin, I've prepared a breakfast if you're interested. Fresh juice and milk are in the 'fridge' if you want any." she called from the kitchen, taking 2 plates out to the table before slipping off to her dresser and pulling out something more covering. A T-shirt and shorts would suffice for now...

*all spoken in Gawainian.

Luckily, Edwinish was Kolin's second language, though he could have figured out the feline's meaning in Domish easily enough from the context. He replied in a Gawainian accent that was no less thick than the cat's Domish one. "Ach, that's all right. I speak Edwinish, and a little Domish after I've had my coffee. Not sure if I'm getting any today-"

Rosa came out then and cut Kolin off, but the promise of coffee to come ameliorated any annoyance from the interruption. Also, Kolin could now recognize his rescuer from last night. "Danke Sie, Rosa."
The hybrid took shots of espresso like most people took shots of scotch, straight up, quick followed by slow. After downing the first shot, which cleared most of the gunk clogging Kolin's throat and mind, he poured another one and leaned against the windowsill, addressing the cat outside again. "My name is Kolin, by the way. I don't believe you've mentioned yours?"
He had refrained from using his last name. 'Von Drake' was not unknown as a technocratic surname, and despite the familiar face of Rosa (which was currently blushing), Kolin was by no means certain that was a safe thing to be here.
Rosa's offer of breakfast seemed to wake up Kolin's stomach, and he immediately regretted that. "Eh, just the juice for now," Kolin replied in Gawainian, "Maybe a little dry toast with it. My stomach has not fully recovered from last night."

The feline scratched behind his ears when the hybrid went to address someone inside. He looked right and left, wondering if he should leave, when the fur came back. "My name is Kolin, by the way." he began. "I don't believe you've mentioned yours?"

The feline tilted his head. He wanted an introduction with a random cat on the street? Maybe he was drunk. The blue fur removed his headphones and put them around his blue and white ruff. "Je m'appelle Luke. Enchanteé pour faire votre connaisance." he said out of pure habit, then fidgeted. "Oh. Um, sorry. My name's Luke. Nice to meet you, Kolin." his tail twitched a little, and he turned to look left and right. There was no one on the road at the moment. It was all quiet this morning.

Rosa poured a glass of juice for Kolin and brought him a piece of toast. She brought her plate over with her as she took Kolin his. She sat in the chair next to the window, and looked out where Kolin was. "Make a new friend?" she asked as she started eating. Only when she finished did she speak again. "You really do need to take a shower Kolin. You could use a change of clothes too." she said as she quickly estimated his measurements, then called down to the front desk and had them bring up a shirt and pants for her winged friend from the night before.

After about 15 minutes, a shirt with wing holes and a pair of species-neutral pants were brought up. She and the hotel employee exchanged a few words and some currency before she returned with the change of clothes...

"Ja, the pleasure is mine." Kolin smiled, but slightly, in order not to show his teeth. The nanite sealants that every technocrat put on as soon as all the adult teeth came in pretty much guaranteed a straight, white, perfect smile. It was one of the few things besides his name that marked Kolin as a member of the upper class, however much care he took to hide that fact.
His memories of last night were still quite hazy. He remembered being carried here by Rosa, and was now certain that this was her apartment. He also remembered that the experiences had been... unpleasant. *I'll need to restore those memories before I make my next move. Probably ought to talk it out with Rosa.*
He'd finished his espresso by the time Rosa spoke to him again. "Ja, he says his name is Luke. Bluish white cat with headphones and drumsticks. You know him?"
On a whim hardly explainable even to himself, he stuck his head back out the window. "Would you like some breakfast? Had a... rough night. Don't think I can stomach most of my share."

Kolin ate his toast at a slower pace than he usually took at breakfast, but finished right about the same time as Rosa. Her talk of clothes made Kolin examine himself again. *Mein Gotz, no wonder that cat was looking at me funny. I look as if I'd spent the night stumbling out of beer gardens.* "I suppose so. Eh..." There was something like chewing gum stuck to Kolin's upper arm. "Ugh! Right. Leave the clothes outside the door."

It took some time for the hybrid to scrub himself down. The scent of the gum had lingered on his fingers. *Pineapple... yes, someone was chewing that last night... I could smell it on his breath... the little one called him Vassikin- I'm beginning to remember now! Yes, that fight in the basement... where? I'll have to ask Rosa where she found me.*
The clothes turned out to be serviceable enough. Kolin shrugged them on and returned to the kitchen.

Not long after, the hybrid's head poked out of the window. "Would you like some breakfast?" he asked. "Had a... rough night. Don't think I can stomach most of my share."

Luke froze. Things were getting weirder and weirder here. He was definitely drunk. The cat suddenly thought of home. He groaned a little, quietly, looking left and right. His stomach rumbled. "Erm." he started, before shrugging. "Sure." he said before moving to the apartment's door. On his way, the feline thought of what could possibly happen. His thoughts went back between his own apartment with his dad and to this strange, drunken hybrid. Reaching the door, he rapped his fist against it. He shuffled a little and jiggled the backpack, making the contents roll about.

Rosa opened the door, "Come on in. Just don't get too wild. His plate is over there." she said in a decidedly Kahunian accented Domusian. She walked over to the window again and sat looking up at the sky. There was a faint scent of moisture in the air that meant that there was rain on the way.

"It should be raining soon. Do you speak any Kahunian? I only know enough Domusian to get around, but Kahunian and Gawainian are by far my best. Edwinish is a close second." she asked the cat as she walked over to her music player and plugged it into the sound system and kept the volume low enough not to bother the neighbors.

The sound of tribal trance beat softly in the room. Loud enough to feel it in your heart, but quiet enough to hear yourself think. This was a song that had not played at the rave the night before. Rosa closed her eyes and let her senses wander to her surroundings as the music played. She could sense the very elements around herself. The water in the clouds, the earth below the streets, the gentle breeze, the flame in the boiler...

After returning to the kitchen, Kolin took a chair opposite Luke. He was deep in thought, head to one side, staring at the feline across from him, as if sizing him up. After a few seconds, he spoke in accented Edwinish. "Probably, you are wondering why I am being so familiar with some random fur out on the street. Well, to cut a long reason short, you made a good first impression. No one who makes so much noise so early in the morning can have many guilty secrets burdening his conscience. Besides which, you seem to be trustworthy."
The hybrid paused for a second, looking at the ceiling as if working out a difficult translation. "I'm in a bit of a... difficulty now, and more than ever I need people whom I can trust. I know Rosa, and I think I've got a good picture of you. You, however, probably have no clue about me." Kolin then grinned, showing the unmistakable pearly whites of a technocrat.
"I will be more than happy to satisfy your curiosity." He went on, unconsciously adopting the musical rhythm for his speech pattern. "But first I must say, I will ask of you a favor, a large one for a stranger, but one which I will, on my honor, repay in kind should the opportunity arise. I have encountered a mystery, one of much danger, that I should like to have some friends to help solve. Are you interested?"
It might have been too much to ask... but then, Luke had been willing to come in in the first place. If that didn't indicate some seed of an adventurous spirit, Kolin didn't know what would.

When the door opened, the blue fur's nostrils was flushed with a distinct reptillian female scent. Almost then, his face paled slightly, but his fur colour helped tone it down from being noticed. So perhaps it wasn't like home. The cat stepped in as per the reptile's direction in accented Domusian accent and looked around the apartment before sitting down casually on the chair and looked at the plate. It looked appetizing, and the cat was definitely hungry. Without much of a second thought the cat began eating and watched the reptile. She headed to the window in silence. Luke looked at her - she seemed familiar.

"It should be raining soon." she broke the quiet mood of the room with her voice. "Do you speak any Kahunian? I only know enough Domusian to get around, but Kahunian and Gawainian are by far my best. Edwinish is a close second." she went over to a music player and plugged it in, and turned the volume low. Luke grinned, and rubbed his nose instinctively.

"I can speak Domusian and Kahunian." he told her in a remarkably well-hidden accent in very good Kahunian. "A decent bit of Edwinish, and no Gawain." Tribal trance music began playing, to which Luke's tail swished occasionally to and his feet began tapping as he chewed - finishing the rest of the breakfast. He forced himself to stop - which was when the hybrid returned to the room, sitting across him. The cat offered a smile as the hybrid looked to be sizing him up. He then finally spoke.

"Probably, you are wondering why I am being so familiar with some random fur out on the street. Well, to cut a long reason short, you made a good first impression. No one who makes so much noise so early in the morning can have many guilty secrets burdening his conscience. Besides which, you seem to be trustworthy."

Luke felt his throat suddenly fill up. He gulped, wondering what he got himself into. This certainly wasn't anything he expected - especially the reason he came was thinking as if this would be another fur who's in a situation like Papa was. But the hybrid was right. There wasn't much the feline had to hide. What point was there to push it down? Life was to be enjoyed.

""I'm in a bit of a... difficulty now," Kolin said after a pause, "and more than ever I need people whom I can trust. I know Rosa, and I think I've got a good picture of you. You, however, probably have no clue about me." he grinned, showing very clean teeth.

So it was a technocrat - who'd have thought? Most obviously this was nothing like Papa. But the words sent a chill down the feline's spine. He just nodded, a frown lining his brow, asking him to go on.

The thought of more mystery and danger brought Luke closer to an approving stance on the situation. It most definitely was exciting. Something different to happen in this town - the blue fur was in the right place and the right time. He smiled with glee, and replied in his accented Edwinish. "Most definitely."

"Kolin, I'll run down and let the manager know that you'll be staying in my room for now. Wouldn't want you being tossed out." Rosa said with a wink and a grin.

Kolin should know that she would help him with almost anything. They were friends, and that is more important to her than most other things...
