A Darkness, Indeed.

A nation that rivals Edwin in power, ruled by the Mustelid. The current system of government is Feudalist/Constitutional Monarchy, with Duchies ruled over by Dukes, which elect the monarch, usually one of the Dukes. The military is third largest in number, and rivals Edwin's fighting effectiveness. It consists of the Gawainian Army. It is geographically one of the largest countries of Feila. Similar to Earth's medieval Germany.

Daichi shifted his position and weight subtly as Lucafell spoke. He was ready to move quickly should the situation call for it.
Jessica silently made several rude gestures at the dragon from her position behind him at the bar. It was a petty thing to do, but Jessica was still more than just a little pissed off at the dragon, and it was really all she could do at the moment.

Daichi sighed when Lucafell finally left, relaxing slightly. He would prefer to be rid of the dragon, and his hounding presence, but it seemed that it would take said dragon's death to accomplish that. He got to his feet, ready to wander the town.

((I'll leave that up to you, Jessica plans on taking a bath, though she did invite Scarla. It really boils down to weather you want to focus on character interactions for a bit, or move the story along.))

Maxwell stood up to leave. He nodded to Daichi and walked out the door.

Scarla turned to Jessica, stressed and said, "I'd love a bath. I need to think about something else." She sighed. This had been the worst week of her life. Maxwell made her feel more lonely, but Jessica seemed nice enough. She really didn't know much about Daichi, though he seemed kinder than Maxwell. She waved to the bartender, who came walking by.
"Need something?" she said.
"You wouldn't happen to have a bath here, would you?" Scarla asked.
"We have a few baths, some sharing rooms some private. It's a bit expensive but..." The bartender paused then remembered what table she was at. "Oh! You're Maximilian's friends! Any friend of Maximilian's is a friend of mine! You can use the bath whenever you like!"
Scarla looked puzzled. Did she mean Maxwell? But they couldn't possibly know each other. Then it hit her. "You mean Lucafell?" she said, grimacing.
"Yeah, what did you not know his name or something?"

Jessica grinned as Scarla accepted her invitation. "Wonderful...It will be a nice chance to relax and unwind." She replied cheerfully. She was briefly confused with the bartender mentioned them being friends of Maximilian. She quickly did her best to remove the expression of confusion from her face when it was mentioned that this perceived association would get them a free bath.

She cut in quickly when it seemed Scarla was at a loss for words. "Well, you see we've only just recently made his acquaintance, and Lucafell was the name he gave us at the time." Her mind seized on what she thought may be a great opportunity. "Maybe after we're done in the baths, you could tell us a little more about him. Our meeting was unfortunately brief." She didn't like the dragon any more now that she had after he attacked, but she couldn't pass up the chance to learn more about an enemy, so she played the part of a curious new acquaintance.

"What do you say we share a room for this bath eh?" She asked Scarla before turning her attention to the bartender, waiting to be shown where the baths were, and ready to pay if needed.

Scarla looked at Jessica. She gave a small smile, the first she had in days. "Sure, that sounds fine." Scarla couldn't wait to take some time to relax. The bartender asked the two to follow her. Around a wall and up some stairs, the bartender led them to two fairly large ceramic bathtubs. She gave a pleasant smile, and said, "Plumbing was fix not to long ago, so use as much hot water as you like!"

The bartender nodded to Jessica's question but first asked the girls "How did you meet Maximilian?" Scarla looked a Jessica for help as she turned on the hot water and undressed as the bathtub slowly filled with water.

Jessica had started filling her tub, then started taking off her clothes, when the bartender asked how they had met the dragon. She froze for a moment in the middle of dropping her skirt off her hips. "Ah, well, we met while we were on our way to this town. You know, one of those chance meetings while traveling." She replied with a smile, telling the truth, but being deliberately vague about the exact circumstances.

She finished undressing, and set her clothes in a neat pile on top of a stool near the tub, then put her satchel on top where it would be easily accessible. "I've been waiting for this for days." She commented as she sat on the edge of the tub, waiting for it to finish filling, and for the bartender.

"I see." the bartender said. "He goes on adventures and meets all sorts of people."
"How'd you meet him?" Scarla asked, curious.
"He saved me when I was young, no more than a year old. My... house burned down, and my parents were killed in the fire. Maximilian raised me as his own." The bartender looked away. "He said he didn't want me to be like him." She looked back, a sad look on her face. "I wish I could have been like him. He protects this place. He's a hero around town." She looked back at the two, and wiped away her frown, showing a gleaming smile. "Oh, I'm rattling. Do you need anything else?"
Scarla's jaw was hanging a bit open. She stammered, "That... can't..." She shut her mouth before she said anything and looked over to Jessica.

"Oh really?" Jessica replied when the bartender mentioned that Maximilian had saved and raised her. that explains a few things, she thought to herself for a moment as the bartender continued. The bartender asked if they needed anything else, and Jessica replied. "Just one more question, and we'll let you get back to your business. Do you know if Maximilian is from here, or where he comes from?" She asked as she gave Scarla a small smile, that said she understood Scarla's incredulity.

Once the bartender was ready to leave them, Jessica thanked her. Once the two were alone, she faced Scarla with a sigh. "Well, it's a good thing we didn't start a fight earlier." She said with a small smile before she gingerly climbed into the tub of hot water. "How are you feeling?" She asked the feline with genuine concern. "You've been pretty quiet the last couple days. Want to talk?" She asked.

"I don't really know," the bartender said, sheepishly. "He said he's been around for a long time. Though he never specified exactly how long." She looked at the girls and gave a smile. "If that's all, I'll be on my way." She left.

Scarla responded to Jessica with a weak "I'm fine." When Jessica asked if she wanted to talk, she gave a small nod. "Why... why did this have to happen? First, Pablo, then Conner. Why?" She paused, thinking. It came to her. "That damned Maxwell started all of this." She mumbled, crossing her arms and burying her face in her forearms.

Jessica's expression made it plain that she doubted the veracity of Scarla's claim to being fine. She nodded back when Scarla started to speak. "Oh dear..." She said softly. "There are no easy answers to that question. Those who believe in fate, or higher powers, would tell you that it was preordained to happen, or part of some cosmic plan. Personally, I'd tell them they're full of shit. The way I look at it, death is a part of life. We're all going to die someday weather it be of old age, disease, a fight, or some freak accident. An unfortunate combination of choices and circumstances culminating would be my answer to why." She paused. "I'm sorry, that probably wasn't a helpful reaction. I can understand how you feel though, I've lost people who were close to me as well, an unfortunate part of the job." She said softly. She reached out carefully, putting her hand on Scarla's head. "Be careful with thoughts like that. Revenge may fill the void, but it just leaves you that much emptier when it's been achieved." She paused a few more moments. "Tell you what. I didn't want to talk about this in front of the others, but I know a ritual. Now I can't make any guarantees, but it may give you a chance to talk to Connor one last time, say anything you feel needs to be said, and maybe get some closure." She made the offer, though she held some concern, a final conversation with the departed doesn't always yield the closure one hopes for.

Scarla gave a sarcastic snort at Jessica's first half of her speech. "Poor choices..." she said quietly. She felt Jessica's hand on her head. Jessica did give her some comfort. Then, Jessica gave her some hope at the mention of talking to Conner one last time. "You could do that?! I... I wouldn't know how to thank you!" She sat straight up in her tub. One last chance... One last time to say goodbye. She calmed down a little. She gave a toothy smile. "That would be nice."

Meanwhile, on the streets, Maxwell and Daichi had been browsing the street markets. Selection was limited, but not so bad that all necessary items couldn't be replenished. Maxwell's legging clinked together, creating a ever present noise. The streets, while not empty, did create a presence of loneliness. Despite the morning being cloudless, the sunlight seemed filtered, as if it were passing through thick, heavy storm clouds.

Maxwell spoke to himself, "Damn, no medicine..." he, himself was running low of his own, and it appeared that this land had no idea what anti-bionics were. He sighed to himself, realizing that if he got sick, he'd have to rely on his own immune system. He checked his satchel. Only a few blood vials left... Some moss... Bandages... No sedatives... He realized he had a native of this world behind him. He walked up to Daichi. "What does this place use for medicine? I'm low on medical supplies, and I need some replacements."

((Maxwell's old world was far advanced in terms of medicine but lacked magical advancements.))

Jessica nodded with a gentle smile when Scarla asked if she could do what she claimed. "I know a ritual that would allow it, but I have to get some supplies first." She replied glad to see what seemed to be a genuine smile on the feline's face. She reached out, grabbed some soap, and started bathing in earnest. "We can go out looking once we're done here if you like." She continued as she worked the soap through her fur, working up a nice lather.

Daichi had walked along with Maxwell, mostly just enjoying the feel of the ground beneath his feet again, and the sun on his scales. Most of the supplies he had grabbed for himself were basic travel supplies, mostly food.

Daichi shook himself from an almost semi-meditative state as Maxwell approached and asked a question. "Oh, well." He replied as he thought for a few moments. "There are herbalists and apothecaries that make poultices, salves, tonic, and such related things. If you're looking for something stronger, we may be able to find an alchemist with potions. Best way to go though, if possible, would be to see a healer...a mage who specializes in healing magic." He shrugged. "If you know what you're looking for though, I would say try an apothecary or herbalist."

Maxwell looked down at his satchel. "This place's idea of medicine seems... rudimentary," he said, a bit annoyed by the lack of what he knew as modern medicine. He approached a medicinal stand. The variety of tonics and potions was a bit lacking. Sore throat medicine here, dry eye tonic there. Nothing I particularly need. He did end up trading a twinkling stone for some herbs and plants, but nothing else caught his eye. He waved to the stand owner and continued to walk down the street. Maxwell and Daichi walked past an alley way when they heard a scream coming from the alley. Maxwell turned around and peeked inside.

"Help me!" a young ferret screamed as she tried to fight off a much larger badger. A rather unpleasant scene was unfolding. Maxwell knew what was happening and he didn't like it. He drew his sword and looked to Daichi.

Daich chuckled. "Most don't rely on medicine when a healer can cure you in mere moments." He replied. He continued to follow along and watch as Maxwell looked through various remedies, and settled on purchasing some herbs. He eventually started idly whistling a small tuned as they continued making their way through the town. His whistling stopped though when he heard the call for help.

Daichi's attention was immediately drawn to the scene down the alleyway. He didn't need to draw his weapon as a staff easily doubles as a walking stick. "It would seem your attentions are unwanted. You should leave her alone friend else you find yourself under attack instead." He warned as he nodded to Maxwell, and started down the alley toward the badger.

"I don't have to take that from you!" The badger angrily said. He pushed the ferret to the ground and reach over to grab his warhammer lying on the ground. When he turned around fully and saw both Daichi and Maxwell, he began to back away. He thought only one person had approached, but upon seeing two, he ran off out the other side of the alley.

The young ferret was nearly in tears after what had nearly happened. "Th- Thank you. I- I can't thank you enough." she paused to see Maxwell begin to walk away. "Wait!" she shouted.
"What? He's gone, so we don't need to be here anymore."
The ferret looked at Daichi, confused.

Daichi held no fear as the badger prepared for a fight. It would seem though that he had changed his mind upon seeing Maxwell step into the alleyway as well. He gave the badger a pleasant smile, and waved as he ran off.

As the young ferret thanked them, Daichi stepped up, and helped her get to her feet. "It's no problem, couldn't just look the other way." He commented. When the ferret looked at him with confusion, Daichi simply shrugged. "He's very...to the point." he offered as an explanation. As he spoke, he gently guided the ferret out of the alleyway. "Do you think you'll be ok from here?" He asked. "would you like an escort?" His concern, and desire to help were quite genuine.
